Song of a Wounded Heart

In November 2004, Lora Jones was a happy wife and proud mother of two beautiful children. Lora and her family left for a family vacation, excited to celebrate the holidays, but sounds of music and laughter in their van were shattered by a head-on collision. Lora watched helplessly as, one-by-one, her beloved family slipped into eternity. Awake in a nightmare, all traces of laughter were replaced by the mournful cries of a wounded heart. How in the world could Lora go on alone? Song of a Wounded Heart tells the true story of Lora’s journey from death to hope. Unbelievably, God sang to her the night of the accident. “Do not be afraid,” He whispered, “This is for my glory.” How could ...

LIFE ON SUGAR CREEK: Battlefield Report from the Last Newspaper War

Newspapers are dying. Giant media companies as well as smaller print media companies are closing, threatened, or in bankruptcy. What has happened to the American newspaper? In his new book, Life on Sugar Creek, Skip Marshall draws comparisons between large and small market newspapers and speculates that years of intransigence and arrogance have resulted in the current crisis. Anyone who has had any sort of relationship with newspapers will enjoy reading this warts-and-all look at a business that the author predicts will not survive the current generation. Dry humor and biting criticism alternate and weave together the story that unfolds in a small town in Indiana where the last American newspaper war is being fought.

The Rise of the Algorithms

The meteoric rise of online video is reshaping the competition for human attention. The Rise of the Algorithms argues that this new technology has changed the way we interact with others, our relationships with public institutions, and our very own behaviors and psyches. Jordan examines the mechanics—and the ethical stakes—of online video platforms, especially YouTube and TikTok but also others, such as Twitch. Tracing the use of algorithms pioneered by Facebook and Google and so successfully exploited by TikTok’s corporate parent, ByteDance, Jordan shows how these platforms now engineer human behavior—with consequences fo...
