Global Change and Protected Areas

High mountains can be considered as particularly appropriate environments to detect effects ofclimate change on natural biocoenoses in a global scale for the following reasons: Firstly, ecosystems at the l- temperature limits of plant life are generally thought to be especially sensitive to climate change [1][2][3]. An already ongoing upward shift of vascular plants at high summits in the Alps, determined by the Austrian IGBP-research [4][5][6][7][8], is most likely a response to the atmospheric warming since the 19th century. Secondly, high mountains still comprise the most natural ecosystems in many countries, being largely untouched by human settlements and agricultural influences, Theref...

The Trevi Fountain

Hi, I’m Luigi Rapagina. You may remember me from such automated information kiosks as “The Colosseo Quadrato” or “Piazza di Spagna”. This time I’m going to guide you through the secrets and magic of the Trevi Fountain, the most famous and beautiful fountain in the whole world. Before we start, let me give you a piece of advice. Once in front of the fountain, sit down and rest for about half an hour, fill a bottle of water at the Nasone (a typical Roman drinking fountain) that you will find on the right side of the big pool and bathe your eyes in the overwhelming beauty surrounding you: now that’s a glimpse of Rome that will be hard to forget! This is the most famous fountain in the world... And just one more thing: don’t forget to toss a coin over your shoulder into the fountain ! It’ll bring you luck!

Azospirillum IV

th th On June 17 and 18 1987 the fourth workshop on "Azospi rillum: Genetics, Physiology, Ecology" took place at the Uni ver sity of Bayreuth, West Germany, organized by the Genetics depart ment. There were about 80 participants, who came from German research institutions, from other European countries, from Is rael, Egypt, India, North Vietnam, and North and South America. The former workshops had also taken place in Bayreuth, in 1981, 1983 and 1985, hence the organizers could draw on the experience obtained at these earlier workshops. Azospirilla have, during the past 15 years, found an ever increasing scientific interest because, first, these soil bacte ria carry the genetic information for binding molecular nitrogen from the air and, second, they live in close vicinity to the roots of grain crops and forage grasses. By exploitation of these two properties, it is hoped to develop inoculation procedures which can be used in nitrogen-deficient soils.

Atmospheric pollution has been a major problem in human technological development and motor vehicles are one of the major sources of particulate matter pollution. This book investigates current models designed to predict air pollutant emissions and fuel consumption for road traffic and presents the outputs of statistical models developed to derive emission factors. Information on the use of Geographic Information Systems and traffic area air pollution monitoring stations is presented in order to comprehend the variations of traffic-related air pollution. Furthermore, this book reports the pros and cons of hydrogen-fuelled internal combustion engines, a study of the new technology to produce syngas from methane with a compression ignition engine. An overview of the characteristics of the factors influencing the thermal efficiency of spark ignition engines fuelled with hydrogen is given as well.
