This volume of eleven essays, compiled as a tribute to Winton Dean on his seventieth birthday, focuses on that area which has absorbed Winton Dean's interest throughout his distinguished career: opera and other theatre music. The first half of the book covers the period from the late seventeenth century to the mid-eighteenth. The second half of the book ranges over later opera: operacomique; Mendelssohn's operas; the influence of Wagner; the finales of Janácek's operas; and Britten's first two major operas, Peter Grimes and The Rape of Lucretia.

Opéra-Comique
Opéra-comique, like grand opéra, a specifically French genre of opera, emerged from the political changes and intellectual discussion that played a recurrent role in determining the nature of artistic expression and production in Paris from the late 17th until the mid-18th centuries. Opéra-comique is distinguished by its use of spoken dialogue to link the arias and sung parts, and its more restrained use of recitatives. Opera in the Age of Rousseau
Historians of French politics, art, philosophy and literature have long known the tensions and fascinations of Louis XV's reign, the 1750s in particular. David Charlton's study comprehensively re-examines this period, from Rameau to Gluck and elucidates the long-term issues surrounding opera. Taking Rousseau's Le Devin du Village as one narrative centrepiece, Charlton investigates this opera's origins and influences in the 1740s and goes on to use past and present research to create a new structural model that explains the elements of reform in Gluck's tragédies for Paris. Charlton's book opens many new perspectives on the musical practices and politics of the period, including the Querelle des Bouffons. It gives the first detailed account of intermezzi and opere buffe performed by Eustachio Bambini's troupe at the Paris Opéra from August 1752 to February 1754 and discusses Rameau's comedies Platée and Les Paladins and their origins.

The essays collected in this volume explore the ways in which hybridity functions in a wide variety of visual, musical, and written texts from France, the Francophone world, and beyond. Hybridity is defined here as an unexpected interaction or combination between two or more forms--whether literary, filmic, ethnic, generic or gendered. The volume covers works ranging from the 16th to the 20th centuries, from Pierre de Ronsard to Woody Allen. The essays demonstrate that rather than being a uniquely postmodern or postcolonial phenomenon, hybridity may be integral to creativity itself, leading to the conclusion that hybrid forms tend to challenge authority by proposing alternatives to existing power structures or questioning conventional ways of thinking and viewing the world.

Dairy Queens
In a lively narrative that spans more than two centuries, the author tells the story of a royal and aristocratic building type that has been largely forgotten today: the pleasure dairy of early modern France. These garden statues have long been dismissed as the trifling follies of a reckless elite. The author challenges such assumptions and reveals the pivotal role that pleasure dairies played in cultural and political life, especially with respect to polarizing debates about nobility, femininity, and domesticity.
