Crusading in the Long Nineteenth Century, 1798–1928

Engaging the Crusades is a series of concise volumes (up to 50,000 words) that offer initial windows into the ways in which the crusades have been used in the last two centuries, demonstrating that the memory of the crusades is an important and emerging subject. Together these studies suggest that the memory of the crusades, in the modern period, is a productive, exciting, and much-needed area of investigation. Crusading in the Long Nineteenth Century offers a trans-cultural examination of “crusade medievalism”, that is, the use of the symbolism and rhetoric of the crusades in the popular and political discourse of the long nineteenth century. Using a variety of sources, from missionary ...

Gathering Leaves and Lifting Words

Winner of the Henry J. Benda Prize sponsored by the Association for Asian Studies Gathering Leaves and Lifting Words examines modern and premodern Buddhist monastic education traditions in Laos and Thailand. Through five centuries of adaptation and reinterpretation of sacred texts and commentaries, Justin McDaniel traces curricular variations in Buddhist oral and written education that reflect a wide array of community goals and values. He depicts Buddhism as a series of overlapping processes, bringing fresh attention to the continuities of Theravada monastic communities that have endured despite regional and linguistic variations. Incorporating both primary and secondary sources from Thaila...

Creating the Zhuang

Often dismissed by scholars as being no different than the Han majority of China, the Zhuang of Guangxi were recognized by Chinese rulers for the first time when the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) offered them their own "autonomous" region. Kaup (political science, Furman U.) analyzes the decision to recognize (and effectively create) the Zhuang identity by the CCP as an effort to shape regional and ethnic loyalties towards integration with the centralized state. Discussing how Zhuang grassroots movements came into being as the CCP withdrew support for special treatment, she finds that calls for integration from the Zhuang has increased. This is a revised edition of the author's The Nestorians and Their Muslim Neighbors (Princeton University Press, 1961). Early in the nineteenth century, the Aramaic-speaking "Nestorian" Christians received special attention when American Protestant missions decided to educate and reform them to help meet the challenge that Islam presented to the growing missionary movements. When archaeologist Layard further publicized the historic minority as "Assyrians", the name acquired a new connotation when other forces at work in the region - religious, nationalistic, imperialistic - entangled these modern Assyrians in vagaries and manipulations in which they were outnumbered and outclassed. The study examines Western Christendom's current position on Islam, with emphasis on the Roman Catholic Church and the World Council of Churches. The revision draws on a wide variety of sources not used in the original.
