Lore of the Jungle

Life in the jungle and life in the city have a lot in common. Self-preservation in the jungle evolved into self-importance in the city. The herd of a family unit evolved into pluralistic herd instincts for a family, then to a team, then to a class and then it toned up to a national identity. Mark Kenneth tells a story of gaining wisdom from a new university student, Aaron Aardvark, whose grand adventure along the footpath of life is to discover how the world works, or doesn’t.

They Left It All Behind

Trauma was a potent influence in the lives of pre-1924 Eastern European Jewish immigrants. They uprooted themselves because of grinding poverty, anti-Semitic discrimination, pogroms, and the violence of World War I. This book’s psychoanalytically-informed life stories, based on 22 in-depth interviews with the immigrants’ adult children, tell the tales of these immigrants and their children. Many of the children believed their parents had left their lives in Eastern Europe behind them. This disavowal—aided by the immigrants’ silence and denial—allowed their children to minimize the trauma and loss their parents suffered both before and after immigrating. I analyze the impact of pare...

Roamers and Wanderers

This mixed genre of short stories and poems set in the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s have one thing in common: They show how travel opens the world to new ideas, yet expresses the universality of mankind. “Getting to Verdun” veers a bit to the crazy side of life, with a woman, her husband, and her father intent on granting the father’s wish to reach Verdun, so he can retrace his steps made in World War I. The daughter has unresolved issues with her father and acts up. In “Norway,” the illusory attention from a colleague of her husband within an atmosphere of possible radiation exposure, and in totally unfamiliar surroundings, distracts a woman from confronting her fear for an imagined ...

This book contains all the marriages which took place in Blount County, Alabama between the years 1920 and 1942. Images of the original documents from the Blount County Court House were examined page by page and transcribed. Not only was the primary information recorded, but other significant details were gathered such as names of bondsmen, names of officials performing the ceremony, names and relationships of those granting permission, and the location of the ceremony. Plus, volumes and page numbers were recorded to provide for better documentation. Additionally, details of all licenses returned unexecuted were recorded. Beginning in 1936 the State of Alabama required more information on their marriage licenses including full birthdates and full names of both parents. This information was included if reported. This book is a handy tool for those with ancestors in Blount or adjoining counties.
