Pubblicato nel 1940, Il deserto dei Tartari segnò la consacrazione di Dino Buzzati tra i grandi scrittori del Novecento italiano. Un libro letto e amato da generazioni di lettori, consacrato da riuscite trasposizioni cinematografiche e teatrali, ma che ha conosciuto un singolare fraintendimento. L’opinione corrente considera infatti il romanzo buzzatiano un’opera disperata, caratterizzata da un finale drammatico e tetro. La rilettura di Lucia Bellaspiga mette in discussione questa vulgata, grazie a una raffinata interpretazione che ricostruisce la sottile ma inesorabile trama di richiami interni al testo e mostra le analogie con altre situazioni e personaggi presenti nel corpus dell’opera buzzatiana. Al termine dell’analisi capiremo che Il deserto dei Tartari è un libro da leggere due volte: la prima per non capire nulla fino all’epilogo e lasciarsi sorprendere (l’effetto che Buzzati ricercava), la seconda per ricucire le trame e riconoscere a ritroso le tante premonizioni disseminate, sino al misterioso sorriso con cui la narrazione si chiude.
