Assessing Regional Trade Arrangements

There has been renewed interest over the past decade in the impact of regional trade agreements (RTAs) on trade patterns among developed and developing countries. This paper assesses the trade creation and diversion effects resulting from a number of RTAs, using an expanded gravity model. The study finds evidence which contradicts the widely held view that RTAs involving developing countries, and African countries in particular, are most likely to have negative effects on the countries involved in the trade agreement, and on their trade with third countries.

The RTAs examined are: AFTA (relating to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations); Andean Community (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela); CARICOM (Caribbean countries); COMESA (eastern and southern African countries); ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States); MERCOSUR (Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay); and SADC (South African Development Community).

Back to Basics

This paper focuses on market access issues in merchandise trade that developing countries might address in the next negotiations of the World Trade Organization. It covers the following issues: an analysis of the patterns of trade and protection in agriculture and manufacturing, a review of the main results of the Doha WTO Ministerial Conference, and an evaluation of the likely impact of several liberalization scenarios. Based on its analysis, a conclusion is drawn on the size of potential gains that developing countries could derive from improved market access in merchandise trade.--Publisher's description.

The Oxford Handbook of International Antitrust Economics

More than any other area of regulation, antitrust economics shapes law and policy in the United States, the Americas, Europe, and Asia. In a number of different areas of antitrust, advances in theory and empirical work have caused a fundamental reevaluation and shift of some of the assumptions behind antitrust policy. This reevaluation has profound implications for the future of the field. The Oxford Handbook of International Antitrust Economics has collected chapters from many of the leading figures in antitrust. In doing so, this two volume Handbook provides an important reference guide for scholars, teachers, and practitioners. However, it is more than a merely reference guide. Rather, it...

The topics covered in the book include: gross trade in parts and components and gravity models, trade in value added, industry case studies, and micro data econometric studies of firm heterogeneity in production networks. The micro data econometric studies explore key aspects of the heterogeneity of firms in East Asian production networks such as technological capability, the entry of small and medium enterprises into production networks, business use of free trade agreements, and access to credit. Blending new sources of data, empirical tools and econometric methods this book is highly recommended for readers who seek to understand the workings of the complex web of production networks in East Asia.
