Temporal Logic
This volume constitutes the proceedings of the First International Conference on Temporal Logic (ICTL '94), held at Bonn, Germany in July 1994. Since its conception as a discipline thirty years ago, temporal logic is studied by many researchers of numerous backgrounds; presently it is in a stage of accelerated dynamic growth. This book, as the proceedings of the first international conference particularly dedicated to temporal logic, gives a thorough state-of-the-art report on all aspects of temporal logic research relevant for computer science and AI. It contains 27 technical contributions carefully selected for presentation at ICTL '94 as well as three surveys and position papers.
Logics in Artificial Intelligence
This volume contains the papers selected for presentation at the conference and two abstracts from invited speakers. The programme committee selected these 25 papers from 12 countries out of 65 submissions from 17 countries. The rst JELIA meeting was in Rosco , France, ten years ago. Afterwards, it took place in the Netherlands, Germany, United Kingdom, Portugal, and now again in Germany. Logic, Language and Reasoning
th This volume is dedicated to Dov Gabbay who celebrated his 50 birthday in October 1995. Dov is one of the most outstanding and most productive researchers we have ever met. He has exerted a profound influence in major fields of logic, linguistics and computer science. His contributions in the areas of logic, language and reasoning are so numerous that a comprehensive survey would already fill half of this book. Instead of summarizing his work we decided to let him speak for himself. Sitting in a car on the way to Amsterdam airport he gave an interview to Jelle Gerbrandy and Anne-Marie Mineur. This recorded conversation with him, which is included gives a deep insight into his motivations and into his view of the world, the Almighty and, of course, the role of logic. In addition, this volume contains a partially annotated bibliography of his main papers and books. The length of the bibliography and the broadness of the topics covered there speaks for itself.
Processing Declarative Knowledge
This volume presents the proceedings of an international workshop on the processing of declarative knowledge. The workshop was organized and hosted by the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) in cooperation with the Association for Logic Programming (ALP) and the Gesellschaft f}r Informatik (GI). Knowledge is often represented using definite clauses, rules, constraints, functions, conceptual graphs, and related formalisms. The workshop addressed such high-level representations and their efficient implementation required for declarative knowledge bases. Many of the papers treat representation methods, mainly concept languages, and many treat implementation methods, such as transformation techniques and WAM-like abstract machines. Several papers describe implemented knowledge-processing systems. The competition between procedural and declarative paradigms was discussed in a panel session, and position statements of the panelists are included in the volume.
Qualitative and Quantitative Practical Reasoning
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the First International Joint Conference on Qualitative and Quantitative Practical Reasoning, ECSQARU-FAPR'97, held in Bad Honnef, Germany, in June 1997. The volume presents 33 revised full papers carefully selected for inclusion in the book by the program committee as well as 12 invited contributions. Among the various aspects of human practical reasoning addressed in the papers are nonmonotonic logics, default reasoning, modal logics, belief function theory, Bayesian networks, fuzzy logic, possibility theory, inference algorithms, dynamic reasoning with partial models, and user modeling approaches.
Qualitative Spatial Reasoning with Topological Information
Spatial knowledge representation and reasoning with spatial knowledge are relevant issues for many application areas such as robotics, geographical information systems, and computer vision. Exceeding purely quantitative approaches, more recently initiated qualitative approaches allow for dealing with spatial information on a more abstract level that is closer to the way humans think and speak. Starting out with the qualitative, topological constraint calculus RCC8 proposed by Randell, Cui, and Cohn, this work presents answers to a variety of open questions regarding RCC8. The open issues concerning computational properties are solved by exploiting a broad variety of results and methods from logic and theoretical computer science. Questions concerning practical performance are addressed by large-scale empirical computational experiments. The most impressive result is probably the complete classification of computational properties for all fragments of RCC8.
