Understanding the Role of the Autonomic Nervous System in Health and Disease

The parasympathetic and sympathetic autonomic systems are involved in several body functions. Cardiovascular risk factors can be estimated through autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity. Previous studies have already supported the relevance of improved parasympathetic function to maintain a good health status. Currently, it is well documented that people with high physical activity status present better ANS function, as well as non-smokers subjects. Many factors are related to impaired ANS function, including, sedentary habits, smoking, high fat intake, genetic changes, etc.

Recurrence Plots and Their Quantifications: Expanding Horizons

The chapters in this book originate from the research work and contributions presented at the Sixth International Symposium on Recurrence Plots held in Grenoble, France in June 2015. Scientists from numerous disciplines gathered to exchange knowledge on recent applications and developments in recurrence plots and recurrence quantification analysis. This meeting was remarkable because of the obvious expansion of recurrence strategies (theory) and applications (practice) into ever-broadening fields of science. It discusses real-world systems from various fields, including mathematics, strange attractors, applied physics, physiology, medicine, environmental and earth sciences, as well as psychology and linguistics. Even readers not actively researching any of these particular systems will benefit from discovering how other scientists are finding practical non-linear solutions to specific problems. The book is of interest to an interdisciplinary audience of recurrence plot users and researchers interested in time series analysis in particular, and in complex systems in general.

Weight training refers to any type of training that involves the body moving in same direction against a force that resists that movement and is supplied by some type of weight including free weights and weight machines [8]. Weight training using near one-repetition (1RM) weight at low velocity has been found to improve the muscle’s ability to generate force, but the increase in strength may not be effective at velocities that stimulate the speed of sport performance [3]. Muscular strength is much different from muscular endurance. Strength is a measure of how much force your muscles can exert, while endurance is the measure of how many times your muscles can repeat a specific exertion of force. Unlike muscular endurance which is controlled by slow twitch fibers, strength is determined by fast twitch fibers which focus more on quick bursts of energy rather than long, drawn out ones.

Lasers in Dentistry

Lasers have become an increasingly useful tool in conventional dental practice. Their precision and less invasive quality make them an attractive technology in esthetic and pediatric dentistry, oral medicine, and a range of other dental procedures. Lasers in Dentistry: Guide for Clinical Practice is a comprehensive, yet concise and easy-to-use guide to integrating lasers into conventional clinical practice. The book begins by providing the reader a thorough understanding of how lasers work and their varied effects on oral tissues. Subsequent chapters are organized by procedure type, illustrating common clinical techniques with step-by-step illustrations and case examples. In addition, each chapter provides an overview of the latest research for use in clinical practice. More comprehensive than at atlas yet practical and clinically oriented in its approach, Lasers in Dentistry is an essential tool for practitioners and students looking to broader their skill set in laser dentistry.

Poincaré Plot Methods for Heart Rate Variability Analysis

The Poincaré plot (named after Henri Poincaré) is a popular two-dimensional visualization tool for dynamic systems due to its intuitive display of the dynamic properties of a system from a time series. This book presents the basis of Poincaré plot and focus especially on traditional and new methods for analysing the geometry, temporal and spatial dynamics disclosed by the Poincaré plot to evaluate heart rate variability (HRV). Mathematical descriptors of Poincaré plot have been developed to quantify the autonomic nervous system activity (sympathetic and parasympathetic modulation of heart rate). Poincaré plot analysis has also been used in various clinical diagnostic settings like diab...

Computer Supported Qualitative Research

This book includes selecting the articles accepted for presentation and discussion at WCQR2021, held on January 20th to 22nd, 2021 (Virtual Conference). The World Conference on Qualitative Research (WCQR) is an annual event that aims to bring together researchers, academics and professionals, promoting the sharing and discussion of knowledge, new perspectives, experiences and innovations on Qualitative Research. WCQR2021 featured four main application fields (Education, Health, Social Sciences, and Engineering/Technology) and seven main subjects: Rationale and Paradigms of Qualitative Research; Systematization of Approaches with Qualitative Studies; Qualitative and Mixed Methods Research; Data Analysis Types; Innovative Processes of Qualitative Data Analysis; Qualitative Research in Web Context; Qualitative Analysis with Software Support. The book is a valuable resource for everyone interested in qualitative research, emphasizing Computer-Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis Software (CAQDAS).
