Ghost Stories by British and American Women

Originally published in 1998 and covering a tradition ignored by most critics, this bibliography assembles and documents a large body of supernatural fiction written by women in English from the end of the 18th century to the present. These stories, the work of women whose literary reputations, personal histories, and bodies of work vary widely, challenge the narrow way in which supernatural literature has traditionally been regarded: they indicate a much richer and more complex set of literary responses to the supernatural than has been hitherto acknowledged. The writers included range from Ann Radcliffe and the Gothic novelists to Louisa May Alcott, Charlotte Gilman, and Edith Wharton to such modern writers as Elizabeth Bowen, Jean Rhys, Muriel Spark, and A.S. Byatt. The volume will be of interest to literary and cultural historians and of particular importance to women's studies scholars.

Alcott's wealth of allusion to other writers, such as Charlotte Bronte, Margaret Fuller, and, especially, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and of recurring motifs such as textiles, texts, and theatricals reveals her consistent subversion of conventional values for women.

All the King's Orphans

“When I was asked to edit All the King's Orphans, I was honored, as I always am to do this work. Little did I know so much of the book would apply to me! Along the way, I started reading for what I could glean from the expansive knowledge contained in these pages. It explained so much about myself and why I do some of the things I do. This is one of those books whose pages will be underlined, highlighted, dog-eared, and coffee stained. If you do not find yourself in these pages, then you will learn how to love others who operate from an orphan frame of mind. So thankful for this book and Lynette's courage to write it.” —Sheila Harper, author of Survivor: A Journey Through Abortion and ...

Everybody in Batson, Texas, and thereabouts thought they knew Captain Yberri—until the day his wife was found with her face blown away by a shotgun in Taylor Boudreaux's trailer. Now Taylor, well, everybody also knew about him and his love of whiskey and women. He finally had met the fate everyone knew would be his someday: shot to death by a jealous husband. But was what everybody knew really so? Big-city attorney Sandra Lerner thought not. And it was her mission to untangle the lies and cut to the truth of the matter. Murder on Pine Island Bayou is a classic murder mystery, with passion, intrigue, and just a touch of southern flavor. A true page-turner.

The Southern Mystique

Literary texts are artifacts of their time and ideologies. This book collection explores the working class in American literature from the colonial to the contemporary period through a critical lens which addresses the real problems of approaching class through economics. Significantly, this book moves the analysis of working-class literature away from the Marxist focus on the relationship between class and the means of production and applies an innovative concept of class based on the sociological studies of humans and society first championed by Max Weber. Of primary concern is the construction of class separation through the concept of in-grouping/out grouping. This book builds upon the theories established in John F. Lavelle's Blue Collar, Theoretically: A Post-Marxist Approach to Working Class Literature (McFarland, 2011) and puts them into practice by examining a diverse set of texts that reveal the complexity of class relations in American society.
