Perspectives on Creativity

  • Categories: Art

Perspectives on Creativity: Volume 2 extends the work of the first volume and examines creativity from multiple viewpoints. The volume contains contributions from writers, therapists, artists, and scholars from disciplines as diverse as psychology and French. The first section addresses the nature of creativity and highlights the role of self-discipline in the creative process. The second section asks what we can learn from studying artists and presents qualitative, phenomenological, quantitative, and archival research on both individuals and groups of artists. The third section discusses the use of creativity within the therapeutic setting, as well as the particular therapeutic needs of creative individuals. The final section of the book presents research exploring creative cognition and its relationship to mood and perception. What makes this book unique is the interdisciplinary consideration of the topic of creativity, the inclusion of works ranging from case studies to theoretical essays, making it appealing to individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds.

The Use of Psychological Testing for Treatment Planning and Outcome Assessment

Recent years have seen dramatic changes, prompted by out-of-control costs, in the way physical and mental health care services are delivered and paid for. The practice of test-based psychological assessment has been affected by these changes, with limitations on reimbursement for psychological testing and total monies allotted for all aspects of psychological treatment. However, psychological tests enable those skilled in their use to quickly identify psychological problems, plan treatment, and document effectiveness of that treatment. This is particularly important during a time when health care organizations need to provide problem-focused limited treatment and demonstrate its effectivenes...

In the 1960s and early 1970s, countercultural rebels decided that, rather than confront the system, they would create the world they wanted. The natural foods movement grew out of this contrarian spirit. Through a politics of principled shopping, eating, and entrepreneurship, food revolutionaries dissented from corporate capitalism and mainstream America. In Food for Dissent, Maria McGrath traces the growth of the natural foods movement from its countercultural fringe beginning to its twenty-first-century "food revolution" ascendance, focusing on popular natural foods touchstones—vegetarian cookbooks, food co-ops, and health advocates. Guided by an ideology of ethical consumption, these institutions and actors spread the movement's oppositionality and transformed America's foodscape, at least for some. Yet this strategy proved an uncertain instrument for the advancement of social justice, environmental defense, and anti-corporatism. The case studies explored in Food for Dissent indicate the limits of using conscientious eating, shopping, and selling as tools for civic activism.

Research Designs and Methods in Psychiatry

This important contribution to psychiatric literature, coming from a group of investigators who have developed a successful clinical research unit over the last decade, has the immediacy, clarity, and practicality expected from those who have personally wrestled with the difficult issues of design and data analysis. In addition, it draws upon a number of pioneers who have devised methods now used broadly in treatment research in psychiatry. This amalgam presents a very informative, down to earth and readable methods book, that should become the standard text in this growing field of investigation. The volume is divided into four sections: general issues, epidemiology, clinical studies, and psychopharmacology. The material offered in the book serves both as a review for clinical researchers and as a guide to clinicians to facilitate exploration in the fields of psychopathology and treatment. The path from clinical empiricism to scientific process ultimately leads to increased professional gratification and enhanced patient care.
