Collection of twenty manuscript letters written from Aug. 17, 1937 through Sept. 30, 1937, by a soldier in the Catalonian town of Lérida during the Spanish Civil War. The letters detail the experiences and concerns of a soldier, identified only as Juan Antonio, stationed at the Comandancia General de Ingenieros at the Cuartel General in Lérida. The letters, which are addressed to the writer's parents, are written on letterhead of the Comandancia General de Ingenieros, Ejército del Este. All are holograph letters, except one, dated Sept. 9, 1937, which is typewritten. On November 2, 1937 the town of Lérida experienced a major aerial bombardment by the Nationalist Legion Condor in which at least 250 people were killed, including many school children and teachers.
