This is the third volume of a three-volume final report, which thoroughly describes, synthesizes and analyzes the results of the four-year Integrated Research Project CIRCE – Climate Change and Impact Research: Mediterranean Environment, funded by the EU 6th Framework Programme. Conducted under the auspices of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Rome, Italy, the study was designed to predict and to quantify the physical impacts of climate change in the Mediterranean, and to assess the most influential consequences for the population of the region.

The aim of this study is to explore the archaeological evidence from a selection of sites used for religion on Crete from the Middle to Late Minoan period (c.2000-c.1000 BCE), interpreting the symbolism of finds in order to identify the types of deities worshipped there. Finds from a selection of sites are described and discussed, from sanctuaries on hills, caves and rural sanctuaries; where relevant, other elements such as features in the landscape, or the use of a site for the observation of celestial phenomena, are taken into account. Rather than focussing on the development and use of cult material, this study uses iconography with cross-cultural comparisons in order to try to identify the types of deities worshipped and to assess the nature of possible foreign influence on the religion of Crete in the Bronze Age.

The First Mediterranean Assessment Report (MAR1) prepared by the independent network of Mediterranean Experts on Climate and environmental Change (MedECC) founded in 2015 was published in November 2020. MAR1 assesses the best available scientific knowledge on climate and environmental change and associated risks in the Mediterranean Basin in order to render it accessible to policymakers, stakeholders and citizens. The report has been written by 190 scientists from 25 countries, all contributing in individual capacity and without financial compensation. The report includes a Summary for Policymakers (SPM), which comprises the key messages of the MAR1. The UNEP/MAP – Barcelona Convention Secretariat, through its Plan Bleu Regional Activity Center, and the Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean work in partnership to support MedECC, and to contribute to establish a sound and transparent scientific assessment process.
For those within the fields of art history and Byzantine studies, Professor Henry Maguire needs no introduction. His publications transformed the way art historians approach medieval art through his insightful integration of rhetoric, poetry and non-canonical objects into the study of Byzantine art. His ground-breaking studies of Byzantine art that consider the natural world, magic and imperial imagery, among other themes, have redefined the ways medieval art is interpreted. From notable monuments to small-scale and privately used objects, Maguire’s work has guided a generation of scholars to new conclusions about the place of art and its function in Byzantium. In this volume, 23 of Henry Maguire’s colleagues and friends have contributed papers in his honour, resulting in studies that reflect the broad range of his scholarly interests.

Earth’s weather and climate are complex nonlinear systems of dynamical/thermodynamical processes that are highly variable on all spatiotemporal scales. The analysis and prediction of those processes and their feedbacks with the other systems of the biosphere (land and ocean), from the viewpoints of both atmospheric science and dynamics/thermodynamics, can improve our knowledge and have a great impact on society. The main aim of this Special Issue was to gather observational, theoretical and modeling studies on the dynamics of the atmosphere and the climate system, as well as on their predictability at different spatiotemporal scales.
