After the discovery of the function of MHC molecules, namely to provide the context for T cell recognition of foreign antigens, in 1974 Zinkernagel and Doherty made the first drawing of MHC+X (Fig. 1 from Zinkernagel and Doherty, Nature, 251: 547, 1974). Realm of Tolerance
Any professional concerned with immunology will be interested in this book dedicated to the memory of Milan Hasek, former director of the Prague Institute of Experimental Biology and Genetics. Prof. Hasek was a congenial scientist and most amiable person - a personal friend of almost all leading immunologists around the world. He was displaced from his post of director in 1970, yet had a lasting impact upon his students and the group known as the Prague School of Immunogenetics. The topics covered in the contributions range from tolerance, immune network, and immunogenetics to the immunology of bacterial and viral infections. They are written by 27 of Prof. Hasek's former co-workers who emigrated to western countries around or after 1968 and became well-known and distinguished scientists in the field. Rapid Methods and Automation in Microbiology and Immunology
The current diagnostic methods for the great variety of microbial agents affecting health are clearly unsatisfactory. New important pathogens have emerged including the agent responsible for bovine spongiform encephalopathy. Moreover, there is an increasing need for more accurate microbial control of our environment, and of the food and water we consume. What is needed are rapid, sensitive and reliable procedures which, on the one hand, should be suitable for automation and, onthe other hand, presented in a cost-effective version suitable for field use. Including new biochemical approaches, such as polymerase chain reaction, recombinant gene products and synthetic peptides, these needs are discussed in these protocols of the RAMI-90 congress.
