Making Over Martha
Martha Slawson sat at her sewing-machine, stitching away for dear life. About her, billowed yards upon yards of white cotton cloth, which, in its uncut length, shifted, as she worked, almost imperceptibly piling up a snowy drift in front of her, drawn from the snowy drift behind. This gradual ebb and flow was all that marked any progress in her labor, and her husband, coming in after some hours of absence and finding her, apparently, precisely where he had left her, was moved to ask what manner of garment she was making. "'Tain't a garment at all, Sam. It's a motta." "A motto?" Sam fairly gasped. Martha put on more speed, then took her feet from the treadle, her hands from the cloth-plate. Larry lay under the trees upon the soft, green grass, with his hat tilted far forward over his eyes and his grimy hands clasped together beneath his head, wishing with all his might first one thing and then another, but always that it was not so warm. When the children had gone to school in the morning, they had seen Larry's figure, as they passed along the street, stretched out full-length beneath the trees near the gutter curbstone; and when they returned, there he was still. They looked at him with curiosity; and some of the boys even paused beside him and bent over to see if he were sunstruck. He let them talk about him and discuss him and wonder at him as they would, never stirring, and scarcely daring to breathe, lest they be induced to stay and question him. He wanted to be alone. He wanted to lie lazily under the trees, and watch the sunbeams as they flirted with the leaves, and hear the birds gossip with one another, and feel the breeze as it touched his hot temples and soothed him with its soft caresses.

'Martha By-the-Day' is a novel by Julie M. Lippmann revolving around the life of a woman named Martha. We are first introduced to her through Claire Lang, who finds herself lost in the middle of a busy street, and was rescued by Martha, who she described as, "A woman of masculine proportions, towering, deep-chested, large-limbed, but with a face which belied all these, for in it her sex shone forth in a motherliness unmistakable, as if the world at large were her family, and it was her business to see that it was generously provided for, along the pleasantest possible lines for all concerned."

Julie Mathilde Lippmann (1864 - 1952) was a writer, literary critic, women's suffrage supporter, and political writer. She wrote novels, plays, poetry, literary criticism, and U. S. propaganda during World War I. Her novel Martha By-The-Day was adapted on stage in 1914. The 1919 film The Hoodlum was based on her novel Burkeses Amy. Lippmann was born in Brooklyn, New York. She was educated at private schools in Brooklyn and by a governess. She traveled extensively. She was friends with Louisa May Alcott, Charles Dudley Warner, William Gillette, and Mark Twain. Her stories were published in various magazines. She wrote the lyrics to the song "My Lady Jacqueminot". Lippmann's poems included "If We But Knew" published in 1889 and "Love and Life".
