Knowledge, Beliefs and Economics

The contributors to this book also suggest the need for a more integrated perspective on the meaning, as well as the role, of knowledge and beliefs in economics in the future. Possible lines of future research such as the extension of the concept of rationality in economics or the focus on cognitive processes in economic action are discussed.

Modeling and Using Context

This book constitutes the reviewed proceedings of the Third International Conference on Modeling and Using Context, CONTEXT 2001, held in Dundee, UK in July 2001. The 30 full papers and 15 short papers presented were carefully reviewed, selected, and revised for inclusion in the proceedings. The papers presented deal with the interdisciplinary topic of modeling and using contextual information from various points of view, ranging through cognitive science, formal logic, artificial intelligence and information processing. Highly general philosophical and logical theories are complemented by specific applications in a variety of fields.

The Negro Leagues Were Major Leagues

How good was Negro League Baseball (1920-1948)? Some experts maintain that the quality of play was equal to that of the American and National Leagues. Some believe the Negro Leagues should be part of Major League Baseball's official record and that more Negro League players should be in the Hall of Fame. Skeptics contend that while many players could be rated highly, NL organizations were minor league at best. Drawing on the most comprehensive data available, including stats from more than 2,000 interracial games, this study finds that black baseball was very good indeed. Negro leaguers beat the big leaguers more than half the time in head-to-head contests, demonstrated stronger metrics within their own leagues and excelled when finally allowed into the majors. The authors document the often duplicitous manner in which MLB has dealt with the legacy of the Negro Leagues, and an appendix includes the scores and statistics from every known contest between Negro League and Major League teams.

Stochastic Economics: Stochastic Processes, Control, and Programming presents some aspects of economics from a stochastic or probabilistic point of view. The application of stochastic processes to the theory of economic development, stochastic control theory, and various aspects of stochastic programming is discussed. Comprised of four chapters, this book begins with a short survey of the stochastic view in economics, followed by a discussion on discrete and continuous stochastic models of economic development. The next chapter focuses on methods of stochastic control and their application to dynamic economic models, with emphasis on those aspects connected especially with the theory of quan...

Mathematical Economics of Multi-Level Optimisation

Since there exists a multi-level policy making system in the market economies, choices of decision makers at different levels should be considered explicitly in the formulation of sectoral plans and policies. To support the hypothesis, a theoretical energy planning approach is developed within the framework of the theory of economic policy planning, policy systems analysis and multi-level programming. The Parametric Programming Search Algorithm has been developed. On the basis of this theoretical model, an Australian Energy Policy System Optimisation Model (AEPSOM) has been developed and is used to formulate an Australian multi-level energy plan.
