Viktor Vasnetsov: Selected Paintings
Viktor Mikhaylovich Vasnetsov (1848 -1926) was a Russian artist who specialized in mythological and historical subjects. He is considered the co-founder of Russian folklorist and romantic modernist painting and a key figure in the revivalist movement. It is ironic, but Viktor, whose name is associated with historical and mythological paintings, initially avoided these subjects at all costs. While living in France, Viktor studied classical and contemporary paintings, academist and Impressionist alike. It was in Paris that he became fascinated with fairy-tale subjects, starting to work on Ivan Tsarevich Riding a Grey Wolf and The Firebird. The vogue for Vasnetsov's paintings would spread in the 1880s, when he turned to religious subjects and executed a series of icons. He was central in moving realism towards a more nationalist, and historical style, believing that a true work of art conveys the past, present, and maybe even the future.
Russia's History Painters

Optical Vortices
This compilation is the first book entirely devoted to the phrase singularities of light, marking the coming-of-age of the subject. Therefore it is appropriate here to recall the circumstances in which John Nye and the authors wrote their original paper on wave dislocations in 1974, and also to set optical vortices in a more general context.
Progress in Optics
This volume presents six review articles devoted to various topics of current interest both in classical and in quantum optics. The first article, by S. Ya. Kilin, entitled "Quanta and Information", is concerned with a multidisciplinary subject which involves optics, information theory, programming and discrete mathematics. The second article, "Optical Solitons in Periodic Media with Resonant and Off-Resonant Nonlinearities", by G. Kurizki, A.E. Kozhekin, T. Optatrny and B. Malomed, reviews the properties of optical solitons in periodic nonlinear media. The article which follows deals with an effect and its inverse which is a manifestation of hindrance and enhancement, respectively, of the evolution of a quantum system by an external agent, such as a detection apparatus. The fourth article discusses the current status of a relatively new branch of physical optics, sometimes called singular optics. The next two articles respectively present a review of advances in two-photon interferometry and their relation to investigations of the foundations of quantum theory and an examination of transverse mode shaping and selection in laser resonators.

Photorefractive Materials and Their Applications 1
This is the first volume of a set of three within the Springer Series in Optical Sciences, and is devoted to photorefractive effects, photorefractive materials, and their applications. Since the publication of our first two Springer books on Photorefractive Materials and Their Applications (Topics in Applied Physics, Vols. 61 and 62) almost 20 years ago, a lot of research has been done in this area. New and often expected effects have been discovered, theoretical models developed, known effects finally explained, and novel applications proposed. We believe that the field has now reached a high level of maturity, even if research continues in all areas mentioned above and with new discoveries arriving quite regularly. We therefore have decided to invite some of the top experts in the field to put together the state of the art in their respective fields. This after we had been encouraged to do so for more than ten years by the publisher, due to the fact that the former volumes were long out of print.
Adaptive Optics Progress
For over four decades there has been continuous progress in adaptive optics technology, theory, and systems development. Recently there also has been an explosion of applications of adaptive optics throughout the fields of communications and medicine in addition to its original uses in astronomy and beam propagation. This volume is a compilation of research and tutorials from a variety of international authors with expertise in theory, engineering, and technology.
