First Published in 1992. This is a collection of the Proceedings of an International Conference Hong Kong, July 1991. The Hong Kong Council for Academic Accreditation (HKCAA) hosted an invitation conference on Quality Assurance in Higher Education. Over 100 senior representatives from accreditation bodies and from higher education attended and spent three days in discussion of quality assurance issues. Delegates came from Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Kenya, Korea, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Puerto Rico, Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Sweden, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. Edited versions of the formal presentations appear in this publication; together they offer a review of international developments in quality assurance in higher education.
The Bologna Process opened a new chapter in the history of the European higher education. The idea of a common European Higher Education Area was developed in Western Europe and accelerated increasingly there in the second half of the 20th century, as a phenomenon of globalization. For the post-communist states in Eastern Europe the complete change of the political system made it possible to join the European Union and the Bologna Process. These changes had an impact not only on the educational policies but also on the educational system and the educational culture as well. This book shows the changes in the higher education of ten countries in Central and Eastern Europe. The country studies are supplemented with an international and a historical comparative analysis, to point out the special features of the implementation of the Bologna aims in the region.
The range, speed and scale of Europeanizing effects in education, and their complexity, has produced a relatively new field of study. Using scholarship and research drawn from sociology, politics and education, this book examines the rise of international and transnational policy and the flow of data and people around Europe to study Europeanizing processes and situations in education. Heinke Röbken analyses how American, German and Swedish universities - and particularly business schools - deal with the various expectations they are confronted with. Policy scientists have long been concerned with understanding the basic tools, or instruments, that governments can use to accomplish their goals. The initial interest in inductively developing comprehensive lists of generic instruments for policy analysis soon gave way to efforts to discover more parsimonious, but still useful, specifications of the elementary components out of which instruments can be assembled. Moving from a generic instrument to a fully specified policy alternative, however, requires the designer to go much beyond the elementary components. This open access book investigates the effects of changes in leadership and managerial structures of Nordic universities resulting from reforms in the last decade.
