Chasing Warsaw
Warsaw is one of the most dynamically developing cities in Europe, and its rich history has marked it as an epicenter of many modes of urbanism: Tzarist, modernist, socialist, and--in the past two decades--aggressively neoliberal. Focusing on Warsaw after 1990, this volume explores the interplay between Warsaw's past urban identities and the intense urban change of the '90s and '00s. Chasing Warsaw departs from the typical narratives of post-socialist cities in Eastern Europe by contextualizing Warsaw's unique transformation in terms of both global change and the shifting geographies of centrality and marginality in contemporary Poland.
No One's Perfect
No-one's Perfect is a fairly innocuous title for a book, but what a book this is. Hard-hitting and highly emotional, David Hay's story of predatory Roman Catholic Priest, Father Patrick Devine is stunningly good. Well written, clear and skilful in its portrayal of a deeply troubled soul whose past catches up with him in spectacular style. It shines a light on the cover-ups by the Roman Catholic Church and follows the change in public attitudes over the decades towards sexual crimes. This novel graphically portrays the effects that early childhood experiences can have on people. The reader starts out feeling sympathy for Patrick, but in the end realises that he deserves his fate. The term page-turner is much overused these days, but it would apply here as this novel is compelling and difficult to put down. It comes highly recommended.
The Vienna Genesis
The Vienna Genesis (Austrian National Library, Codex Theologicus graecus 31) is a fragmentary Greek manuscript of the Book of Genesis written on purple dyed parchment with silver ink. It is assumed that the book was created in the first half of the 6th century in the Near East. 24 folios with 48 miniatures have survived and have been stored at the Austrian National Library since 1664. The Vienna Genesis is famous for its rich cycle of biblical illuminations. The silver ink's degradation, which has resulted in extensive damage to the parchment, was already observed in the 17th century. In a three-year research project the parchment, the silver inks, the pigments and dyes were investigated. The detailed material analysis formed the base for conservation and preservation of the manuscript. The book describes the different studies of the project and their results: How was parchment made in Late Antiquity? How was parchment dyed purple? What is the purple dye of the Vienna Genesis? What is the composition of the silver ink and what are the causes of the severe damage? Which pigments were used by the different painters? How can the Vienna Genesis be best conserved for the future?
