Perspectives on the Architecture and Acquisition of Syntax

Continuity and Variation in Germanic and Romance
This volume offers a range of synchronic and diachronic case studies in comparative Germanic and Romance morphosyntax. They maintain that Merge is binary, but argue that the binarity of Merge refers to syntactic positions Merge relates: what has typically been formulated as a constraint that prevents Merge from combining more than two syntactic objects is a constraint on Merge's relating more than two syntactic positions.
Research in English Language Education in Indian Universities: A Directory
This directory is the first ever compilation of bibliographic data of research in English language education (ELE) from over 80 universities of India in the last 30 years. It covers particularly the theses and dissertations in ELE in Indian universities. The data consists of over a thousand entries, which can be searched in various ways - by keywords, levels of learners, geographical areas, universities or authors. In most cases, links are also provided to locate particular works in the libraries of respective universities. The book will be useful to those interested in studying the developments in English language education in India and those who wish to undertake research in ELE themselves.
Verb Second
This book addresses a general phenomenon in the European languages: verb second. The articles provide a comprehensive survey of synchronic vs. diachronic developments in the Germanic and Romance languages. New theoretical insights into the interaction of the properties of verbal mood and syntactic structure building lead to hypotheses about the mutual influence of these systems. The diachronic change in the syntax together with changes in the inflectional system show the interdependence between the syntactic and the inflectional component. The fact that the subjunctive can license verb second in dependent clauses reveals further dependencies between these subsystems of grammar. "Fronting finiteness" furthermore constitutes an instance of a main clause phenomenon. Whether "assertion" or "at-issueness" are encoded through this grammatical process will be a matter in the debates discussed in the book. Moreover, information structure appears to be directly related to the fronting of other constituents in front of the finite verb. Questions concerning the interrelations between these various subcomponents of the grammatical system are investigated.
