Artillery: The Battle-Winning Arm

Artillery: the Battle-Winning Arm is a book about the battle winning role played by the artillery. The artillery made its first impart on the Indian soil in 1526, in the first Battle of Panipat, when Babar inflicted a crushing defeat on his opponent, Ibrahim Lodhi. The artillery shot into prominence once again during the rule of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Then followed a period of relative stagnation, with the value of the gun confined barely to a supporting role of infantry and armour. It is only during the last two decades that there has been a considerable growth in the expansion of the artillery. The artillery has now emerged as a formidable force of about 250 units, including two artillery divisions, on its order of battle. (Orbat) Further, the artillery of today is equipped with long-range multi-barrel rocket launchers (MBRL’s) and guns capable of firing a variety of lethal ammunition. With the above resurgence of the Indian artillery, it is no longer a supporting arm but a fighting arm much like the infantry and armour. In fact, the artillery has emerged as a battle-winning arm, where the artillery battles will decide the course of future ground operations.

Asian Strategic and Military Perspective

Asian Strategic and Military Perspective

Nation-states are compelled to function within the parameters of their respective geo-political and geo-strategic environment. The behavior of nations, and the interplay of their strengths and vulnerabilities, particularly, their foreign and military posturing, is predicated on geographic, political and economic factors. Besides, historical imperatives also coalesce in determining the way States shape their policies. Many Asian countries today are threatened by a war that is of a subtle and imperceptible nature. There is also a paradigm shift in the perception of national security, especially with the blurring of the notion of internal and external security. This is reflected in the growing military expenditures of several Asian countries. This volume attempts to examine the critical factors that influence the foreign and defense policies of Asian countries. It provides comprehensive information and analyses of the strengths, needs, aspirations and compulsions that shape their strategic and military outlook..

The Punjab Story

6 June 1984: The Indian Army storms the Golden Temple in Amritsar. Called Operation Bluestar, the historic and unprecedented event ended the growing spectre of terrorism perpetrated by the extremist Sikh leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and his followers once and for all. But it left in its wake unsolved political questions that continued to threaten Punjab's stability for years to come. How, in a brief span of three years, did India's dynamic frontier state become a national problem? Who was to blame: the central government for allowing the crisis to drift despite warnings, or the long-drawn-out Akali agitation, or the notorious gang of militants who transformed a holy shrine into a sanctuary for terrorists? First published two months after Operation Bluestar, The Punjab Story pieces together the complex Punjab jigsaw through the eyes of some of India's most eminent public figures and journalists. Writing with the passion and conviction of those who were involved with the drama, they present a wide-ranging perspective on the past, present and future of the Punjab tangle; and the truth of many of their'conclusions having been borne out by time.
