Aid and Dependence
First published in 1975, in conjunction with the Overseas Development Institute, this study examines the case for and against aid for developing nations, taking the specific example of British aid to Malawi’s economic development since independence in 1964. Kathryn Morton suggests that without Britain’s aid, Malawi’s capacity to develop would have been severely undermined and that aid has not generally inhibited Malawi’s efforts to help itself. The rapid growth of both agricultural and industrial output alongside foreign exchange earnings and avoidance of large-scale urban unemployment and balance of payment problems do not bear out the critics' gloomy predictions. This book does much to counter the critics’ case against aid and raises a number of vital questions in determining the future shape of aid policies for both Britain and other developed countries.

Historical Dictionary of Malawi
This third edition of the dictionary emphasizes what the editor calls the "new" Malawi, or post Banda era, in which Malawi is seeking to reintroduce democracy and reinforce its capitalist heritage. The alphabetically arranged entries include broad topics such as environment, as well as specific examples of items such as government agencies, like the Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation. Other entries, such as ethnic groups, incorporate dozens of other terms with their own entries, i.e. Ngoni, Nyanja, and Yao. Kalinga, currently teaching history at North Carolina State U., has also taught at a variety of African universities, including the University of Malawi, and Crosby whose research interests lie in the economics of East Africa, is currently a high school teacher and administrator. c. Colonialism to Cabinet Crisis
The late Andrew C. Ross was a Scottish missionary in Malawi between 1958 and 1965 and one of the founding members of the Malawi Congress Party. Like many other Scottish missionaries of the period, he deeply opposed the Central African Federation, and was a strong supporter of the emerging Malawian nationalist movement. When, following the declaration of a State of Emergency in March 1959, many of the political leaders of the Nyasaland African Congress were detained, Andrew regularly visited those held at Kanjedza near Limbe - visits which helped to deepen both his friendship with them, and his commitment to their cause. Thus, when Orton Chirwa was released from detention later in 1959, and persuaded to become the temporary leader of the newly formed Malawi Congress Party, Andrew Ross was one of the first to join, becoming the proud holder of MCP card number six. This book covers the period 1875-1965 and includes a Foreword by Professor George Shepperson.
