Creating Financial Value

How many senior executives get to the top with little or no formal financial training? They may have been appointed to the executive board as a result of their expertise in marketing, HR, sales or IT, yet board members have a responsibility, individually and collectively, to make informed decisions on proposed actions - decisions which inevitably affect the value of their business. Finance is a subject full of jargon and convention. This is confusing and off-putting to non-specialists - responses range from misunderstanding and frustration to downright fear. As a consequence, it is difficult or impossible for non-specialists to contribute fully to important debates on policy and the actions ...

Religion in America Since 1945

Moving far beyond the realm of traditional "church history," Patrick Allitt here offers a vigorous and erudite survey of the broad canvas of American religion since World War II. Identifying the major trends and telling moments within major denominations and also in less formal religious movements, he asks how these religious groups have shaped, and been shaped by, some of the most important and divisive issues and events of the last half century: the Cold War, the Civil Rights Movement, the Vietnam War, feminism and the sexual revolution, abortion rights, the antinuclear and environmentalist movements, and many others. Allitt argues that the boundaries between religious and political discou...

Malcolm Lowry's "La Mordida"

Although Malcolm Lowry (1909-1957) published only two novels--Ultramarine and Under the Volcano--in his lifetime, numerous other works, most of which have since been edited for publication, were in various stages of composition at his death. La Mordida, the longest and most significant of the manuscripts that have not been previously published, is a draft of a novel based on Lowry's visit to Mexico in 1945-46, which ended in the arrest and deportation of Lowry and his wife following a nightmarish run-in with corrupt immigration authorities. On its most immediate level, the title La Mordida--which means "the little bite," Mexican slang for the small bribe that officials are apt to demand in o...
