Asymptotic Combinatorics with Application to Mathematical Physics

New and striking results obtained in recent years from an intensive study of asymptotic combinatorics have led to a new, higher level of understanding of related problems: the theory of integrable systems, the Riemann-Hilbert problem, asymptotic representation theory, spectra of random matrices, combinatorics of Young diagrams and permutations, and even some aspects of quantum field theory.

Proceedings of the XI international conference Stochastic and Analytic Methods in Mathematical Physics

The XI international conference Stochastic and Analytic Methods in Mathematical Physics was held in Yerevan 2 – 7 September 2019 and was dedicated to the memory of the great mathematician Robert Adol’fovich Minlos, who passed away in January 2018. The present volume collects a large majority of the contributions presented at the conference on the following domains of contemporary interest: classical and quantum statistical physics, mathematical methods in quantum mechanics, stochastic analysis, applications of point processes in statistical mechanics. The authors are specialists from Armenia, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, Russia, UK and Uzbekistan. A particular aim of this volume is to offer young scientists basic material in order to inspire their future research in the wide fields presented here.

At the Summer School Saint Petersburg 2001, the main lecture courses bore on recent progress in asymptotic representation theory: those written up for this volume deal with the theory of representations of infinite symmetric groups, and groups of infinite matrices over finite fields; Riemann-Hilbert problem techniques applied to the study of spectra of random matrices and asymptotics of Young diagrams with Plancherel measure; the corresponding central limit theorems; the combinatorics of modular curves and random trees with application to QFT; free probability and random matrices, and Hecke algebras.

Random Walks in the Quarter-Plane

Promoting original mathematical methods to determine the invariant measure of two-dimensional random walks in domains with boundaries, the authors use Using Riemann surfaces and boundary value problems to propose completely new approaches to solve functional equations of two complex variables. These methods can also be employed to characterize the transient behavior of random walks in the quarter plane.

The Soviet Environment

This book, originally published in 1992, describes the Soviet environment at its crisis point in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Beolorussia and the Ukraine had, as a result of the Chernobyl accident, been declared ecological disaster zones and across the country as a whole as many as 20 per cent of the population lived in environmental danger areas and another 35-40 per cent in unsatisfactory conditions. According to a Supreme Soviet Environment Committee report of 1989, 80% of all illness in the USSR related either directly or indirectly to environmental problems. In this book, leading specialists from both the West and the Soviet Union present a comprehensive analysis of these problems. The contributors examine the aftermath of Chernobyl, the catastrophic causes and effects of the Aral Sea's shrinkage, the environmental issues and public unrest. The depth of analysis in this volume together with the breadth of topics addressed will ensure that it is read by students and specialists of the Soviet Union and environmental issues, as well as by all government officials, journalists and industrialists with an interest in the Soviet environment.

An examination of how the technical choices, social hierarchies, economic structures, and political dynamics shaped the Soviet nuclear industry leading up to Chernobyl. The Chernobyl disaster has been variously ascribed to human error, reactor design flaws, and industry mismanagement. Six former Chernobyl employees were convicted of criminal negligence; they defended themselves by pointing to reactor design issues. Other observers blamed the Soviet style of ideologically driven economic and industrial management. In Producing Power, Sonja Schmid draws on interviews with veterans of the Soviet nuclear industry and extensive research in Russian archives as she examines these alternate accounts...

This is the second volume in a series of innovative proceedings entirely devoted to the connections between mathematics and computer science. Here mathematics and computer science are directly confronted and joined to tackle intricate problems in computer science with deep and innovative mathematical approaches. The book serves as an outstanding tool and a main information source for a large public in applied mathematics, discrete mathematics and computer science, including researchers, teachers, graduate students and engineers. It provides an overview of the current questions in computer science and the related modern and powerful mathematical methods. The range of applications is very wide and reaches beyond computer science.

Recent Developments in Stochastic Methods and Applications

Highlighting the latest advances in stochastic analysis and its applications, this volume collects carefully selected and peer-reviewed papers from the 5th International Conference on Stochastic Methods (ICSM-5), held in Moscow, Russia, November 23-27, 2020. The contributions deal with diverse topics such as stochastic analysis, stochastic methods in computer science, analytical modeling, asymptotic methods and limit theorems, Markov processes, martingales, insurance and financial mathematics, queueing theory and stochastic networks, reliability theory, risk analysis, statistical methods and applications, machine learning and data analysis. The 29 articles in this volume are a representative sample of the 87 high-quality papers accepted and presented during the conference. The aim of the ICSM-5 conference is to promote the collaboration of researchers from Russia and all over the world, and to contribute to the development of the field of stochastic analysis and applications of stochastic models.
