Stories from Africa

Without rapid progress in reducing and eliminating hunger and malnutrition by 2030, the full range of Sustainable Development Goals cannot be achieved. We can advance faster if we work together. In its quest to achieve a Zero Hunger world, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) works in partnership with communities, governments, and organizations across Africa to address malnutrition, boost the productivity and resilience of small-scale farmers, share knowledge about innovative farming practices, and build sustainable food systems. FAO’s bold approach focuses on empowering women and employing youth, providing them with the skills and resources (land, capital, emerging technology) they need to grow their own businesses and engaging them in the decisions that affect their lives. This book celebrates some of the progress made in communities across Africa, showcasing real-life examples of the ways we can work together to achieve Zero Hunger. While there is no magic bullet, many workable and innovative solutions are already out there to help men and women overcome the challenges they face in trying to earn a living and feed their families.

First Published in 1987. The Political Economy of Risk and Choice in Senegal grows out of the efforts and concerns of many people and institutions. The Ministry of Plan in the Government of Senegal and the United States Agency for International Development Dakar called on the Research Program in Development Studies of the Woodrow Wilson School to address Senegal’s rural development problems in the light of RPDS experience doing policy relevant research in African countries. RPDS worked closely with the Ministry of Plan and USAID, Dakar on this effort from 1982 to 1984. The chapters in this study take as their common theme the analysis of risk in agricultural production, management, and policy implementation in Senegal.

Characteristics, patterns and drivers of rural migration in Senegal

Although migratory flows from rural areas are a common phenomenon in most developing countries, we possess little information on their dynamics and determinants. In this context, in September 2017, in the framework of the project “Fostering productive investments to create decent farm and non-farm jobs for rural youth in migration-prone areas in Senegal”, FAO and the Senegalese National Agency of Statistics and Demography (ANSD) conducted a household survey with the aim of generating information on migration phenomena in rural areas. The survey results described in this study contribute to broadening the available knowledge base on the causes and dynamics of rural migration and aim to inform sectoral economic policies, youth employment and rural development policies.

Social protection and migration

Social protection and migration

This publication was developed by the Maastricht Graduate School of Governance (UNU-Merit) in partnership with FAO. The policy paper is conceived as a framing paper, which conceptualizes the relationship between social protection, migration, and rural development, and strengthens these synergies for FAO’s programming. The relationship between social protection, migration, and rural development is critical to the FAO mandate to end hunger for all. In its capacity as an organization working across emergency and development contexts, FAO is well positioned to promote the synergies that exist at the intersection of social protection and migration in rural contexts. Accordingly, the Social Protection and Migration Policy paper seeks to strengthen migration and social protection synergies in FAO’s programming by identifying linkages between social protection and migration from currently available literature; highlighting illustrative examples of areas where FAO has already started to work at the intersection of migration and social protection and offering ways of how FAO can further mainstream migration-social protection synergies.

African communities have had to endure years of outside intervention from individuals and organisations. The actions and achievements of the people themselves are all too rarely acknowledged. Derrick Knight's A Burning Hunger pays tribute to the efforts of ordinary Senegalese - it draws together vivid personal accounts of the lives and work of two generations of farmers, labourers, health workers and others he has talked with on his frequent visits to Senegal.
