Internal Combustion Engine Handbook

More than 120 authors from science and industry have documented this essential resource for students, practitioners, and professionals. Comprehensively covering the development of the internal combustion engine (ICE), the information presented captures expert knowledge and serves as an essential resource that illustrates the latest level of knowledge about engine development. Particular attention is paid toward the most up-to-date theory and practice addressing thermodynamic principles, engine components, fuels, and emissions. Details and data cover classification and characteristics of reciprocating engines, along with fundamentals about diesel and spark ignition internal combustion engines...

Mathematical Methods 4 Electrotechnic Freaks

The book offers a practice-oriented introduction to the mathematical methods of electrical engineering. The focus is on the solution of ordinary and partial differential equations using analytical and numerical methods. The analytical methods are opposed to the numerical methods. The differential equations were chosen with a view to the problems of electrical engineering. It is shown how they can also be transferred to mechanics or thermodynamics. Numerous examples and exercises with elaborated solutions facilitate the transfer of knowledge to applications.

A Knight's Captive

In the year 1066, England struggles against Norman invaders, and two strangers cross paths on a pilgrimage fraught with peril--only to discover a love worth any danger... Battle-weary knight Marc de Sens has never encountered a woman like Sunniva of Wereford: beautiful, brilliant, and miles above the curs who call themselves her kin. Alas, she is promised to another and Marc's obligation is to his three orphaned nieces. But when Sunniva's circumstances suddenly change, Marc learns the truth about her "betrothal"... A rough-hewn knight so gentle with children intrigues Sunniva, who never knew a kind word or caring touch from any man until Marc rescued her from the grimmest of fates. When her loutish father and brothers are killed, Sunniva is finally free, but her troubles are far from over. Although Marc has appointed himself her protector, he has a dark secret--as well as an uncanny ability to disarm her completely...

La connaissance de l'Islam dans l'Occident médiéval

This volume, the second in the series of Marie-Thérèse d’Alverny’s selected articles to be published by Variorum, gathers the majority of her studies on the understanding of Islam in the West from the early Middle Ages until the mid-13th century; some related works will be included in a further selection. In the 12th century, as she shows, a serious effort was for the first time made to learn something of the reality behind the fabulous and scurrilous stories about Muhammad and Islam. A collection of translations from Arabic, including the Koran, was commissioned in 1140 by Peter the Venerable of Cluny, and d’Alverny found the manuscript in which his secretary wrote these out. This discovery led her to explore other translations into Latin of the Koran and other Islamic texts, to identify the work of the translators Hermann of Carinthia, Robert of Ketton and Mark of Toledo, and to depict the milieu in which this work was possible.

Ocean satellite remote sensing plays important roles in the observations of physical, biological and biogeochemical features in inland, coastal, and global ocean waters, with high temporal and spatial resolution. The satellite-measured ocean products are used for near-real-time ocean monitoring and climate data records to understand short-/long-term variabilities in marine environments and ecosystems as well as for decision making tools to manage social, economic, and environmental benefits. Validation/evaluation including a combination of field measurements and inter-satellite comparison is an essential step in providing more accurate satellite-derived ocean products. In this Special Issue,...
