This guide, illustrated by more than 1,500 underwater photographs, presents nearly 1,200 species of fish in the Indian Ocean and Red Sea. The international symposium "Tuna fishing and fish aggregating devices", October 1999, in Martinique, takes stock of the exploitation of large pelagic fish around FADs, based on regional synthesis for the three oceans and the Mediterranean Sea. Main themes include technology, fishing methods, impact on resources, biology of fish aggregation, anthropology and economic aspects of FAD exploitation.
The oceans cover over 70% of our planet. They are host to a biodiversity of tremendous wealth. Its preservation is now a global priority featuring in several international conventions and a confirmed objective of European policies and national strategies. Understanding the dynamics and the uses of the marine biodiversity is a genuine scientific challenge. Fourteen international experts have got together and identified five priority research themes to address the problem, based on analysing the state of knowledge.

This publication contains information about the Committee's meeting in July 2004 which discussed the diversity in practices of the establishment and management of fish aggregating devices (FADs) and agreed there was a need for more co-operation and exchanges on moored FAD fishing at the subregional level to ensure sustainability in the exploitation of the shared fish resources. This report includes summaries of the presentations, discussions and decisions of the meeting, together with full national reports, case studies and technical presentations in the language in which they were presented.
"Woll demonstrates her case by analyzing the surprising evolution of support from large firms for liberalization in telecommunications and international air transport in the United States and Europe. Within less than a decade, former monopolies with important home markets abandoned their earlier calls for subsidies and protectionism and joined competitive multinationals in the demand for global markets. By comparing the complex evolution of firm preferences across sectors and countries, Woll shows that firms may influence policy outcomes, but policies and politics in turn influence business demands."--BOOK JACKET.
