"Since 2010 Marc has been photographing the images that make up The Last Stand. This piece of work aims to reflect the histories and stories, military conflict and the memories held in the landscape itself. The series is made up of 80+ images and is documenting some of the physical remnants of the Second World War on the coastlines of the British Isles and northern Europe. Focusing on military defence structures that remain and their place in the shifting landscape that surrounds them. Many of these locations are no longer in sight, either subsumed or submerged by the changing sands and waters or by more human intervention. At the same time others have re-emerged from their shrouds"--Publisher's description.

Psychology of Motivation

In psychology, motivation refers to the initiation, direction, intensity and persistence of behaviour. Motivation is a temporal and dynamic state that should not be confused with personality or emotion. Motivation is having the desire and willingness to do something. A motivated person can be reaching for a long-term goal such as becoming a professional writer or a more short-term goal like learning how to spell a particular word. Personality invariably refers to more or less permanent characteristics of an individual's state of being (eg: shy, extrovert, conscientious). As opposed to motivation, emotion refers to temporal states that do not immediately link to behaviour (e.g., anger, grief, happiness). This book presents that latest research in this field.

Football, Place and National Identity

Given its popularity, international football might be viewed as a prism through which the imagined community of the nation becomes closer to a manifest reality with matches providing examples of that community collectively rejoicing or crying. The sport potentially sheds insights on the complexities of ethnic and national identity, as it is a medium through which allegiances are (re)produced and expressed. Alongside the internationalisation of club teams, international representative teams also appear to be becoming more trans-national with players born outside that country, but with family connections to it, playing in the national colours. Increasing flexibility of regulations governing in...

A Farewell to Arms, Legs & Jockstraps

Shah, former sports columnist, knows how to grab the best story. Throughout the history of imperial China, the educated elite used various means to criticize government policies and actions. During the Song dynasty (960-1278), some members of this elite found an elegant and subtle means of dissent: landscape painting. By examining literary archetypes, the titles of paintings, contemporary inscriptions, and the historical context, Alfreda Murck shows that certain paintings expressed strong political opinions--some transparent, others deliberately concealed. She argues that the coding of messages in seemingly innocuous paintings was an important factor in the growing respect for painting among the educated elite and that the capacity of painting’s systems of reference to allow scholars to express dissent with impunity contributed to the art’s vitality and longevity.

New England Patriots IQ

The New England Patriots came into being as a bargain basement franchise in an untested upstart professional football league. During the first ten years of their existence, they were nomads without a home field and lost more games than they won. Yet the team, then known as the Boston Patriots, eventually captured the hearts and minds of football fans across the six state region and in “Patriots Nation” throughout America. Over its colorful five-decade history, the once rag-tag establishment has become a model franchise in the National Football League and an organization symbolic with excellence, championships, and with one of the finest stadiums in the NFL. From their humble beginning in...
