Celia
Dutch artist Marcel van Eeden has completed a drawing a day since 1993. He interprets photographs and texts produced before 1965, which happen to catch his eye during his visits to book dealers, archives, and libraries. The books airs the mystery surrounding the figure of Celia in van Eeden's latest cycle of works, and also features a representative selection of early pieces from his stubborn (in the best sense of the word) oeuvre.
Marcel van Eeden: Drawings and Paintings 1992-2009
The drawings of Marcel van Eeden (born 1965) depict seemingly familiar images of decisive or epiphanic moments. Based on photographs culled from vintage magazines and periodicals, which the artist finds in used bookstores and archives, these graphite drawings are often counterposed with captions and assembled in series that further heighten the implication of a buried or occluded narrative. This first comprehensive monograph on van Eeden makes a selection of over 500 drawings, including The Zurich Trial 1series and the recent Witness for the Prosecutioncycle and offers a first overview of Marcel van Eeden's oeuvre.

The artist book "Marcel van Eeden - 1898" is being published to coincide with the Hans-Thoma Prize 2023. The prize-winner, Marcel van Eeden (* 1965), explores Thoma's little-known travels to the Netherlands in 1898. He reflects on Thoma's analysis of Rembrandt van Rijn or Paulus Potter, under the problematic influence of cultural theorist Julius Langbehn. Present-day gum bichromate images of the places Thoma visited alongside historical quotes by Thoma and Langbehn result in a multifaceted, critical consideration of nationalistic views on culture.

Dutch draftsman and painter Marcel van Eeden is known for his characteristic work reminiscent of film noir, wherein the use of black and white contrast is prominent. Employing charcoal and coloured pencils, as well as watercolour paint, his stylised and tightly cropped images visualise dramatic scenes. Like a sprawling graphic novel, this visual compendium of his most recent series of drawings concocts compelling fictions based on historical facts, interweaving several chronologies and narratives. Subjected to unforeseen experiences, the protagonists' lives begin to converge as their stories gradually expand across this ingenious labyrinth of gripping tales and thrilling twists.
