Naming, Defining, Phrasing Strong Asymmetrical Dependencies
An examination of the terms used in specific historical contexts to refer to those people in a society who can be categorized as being in a position of ‘strong asymmetrical dependency’ (including slavery) provides insights into the social categories and distinctions that informed asymmetrical social interactions. Looking at cultural appropriation from around the world, this volume uses the field of cultural studies--heavily influenced by both economics and sociology--as a lens through which to view the paradigm of transcultural consumption. The editors present a variety of consumptive phenomena including: the introduction of Chinese foods to the United States, Ford cars in Germany, and American schoolbooks in the Philippines.
