From the award-winning journalist and author, a lyrical, raw and humane investigation of dementia that explores both the journeys of the people who live with the condition and those of their loved ones After a diagnosis of dementia, Nicci Gerrard’s father, John, continued to live life on his own terms, alongside the disease. Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD) is a highly prevalent hereditary renal disorder in which fluid-filled cysts are appeared in both kidneys. Main causative genes of ADPKD are PKD1 and PKD2, encoding for polycystin-1 (PC1) and polycystin-2 (PC2) respectively. Those proteins are localized on primary cilia and function as mechanosensor in response to the fluid flow, translating mechanistic stimuli into calcium signaling. With mutations either of PKD1 or PKD2, hyper-activated renal tubular epithelial cell proliferation is observed, followed by disrupted calcium homeostasis and aberrant intracellular cyclic AMP (cAMP) accumulation. Increased cell proliferation with fluid secreti...

The Biology of the Schizophrenic Process

This volume contains the edited transcript of the second Totts Gap Colloquium, held at Totts Gap, Pennsylvania, May 29-31, 1975. The objective of the Colloquium was to bring into focus what is known of pathogenic mechanisms of schizophrenic manifestations. One hope was to differentiate among syndromes that share the fea~ tures of schizophrenia, disorganization of thought and talk, inap propriateness of affect, circumstantiality, withdrawal from social interaction, paranoid ideation, hallucinations, delusions, catelepsy, catatonic excitement or mutism, etc. What is known of the neural and chemical processes capable of inducing such aberrations was discussed with an attempt to reconcile dispar...

Evaluation in a Nutshell

Evaluation in a Nutshell 2e provides students with a succinct guide to the strategic and technical issues that arise during the evaluation of health promotion programs. The perfect companion to Theory in a Nutshell 3e, this book contains practical advice on how to understand, interpret and assess existing health promotion programs. This guide includes not only individual interventions but also community and population health programs, and demonstrates the need to tailor each evaluation to suit the circumstances of the particular program. This second edition has been fully updated, and includes: · a new chapter focusing on the evaluation of studies on smaller group programs for replication and dissemination to the wider population · separate chapters on formative evaluation and process evaluation to provide students with a more thorough explanation and therefore better understanding of these two areas. Written by international experts in health promotion, this book will guide students in developing the core skills necessary for valuable and practical evaluations.

The ability to trace and authenticate a food product is of major concern to the food industry. This important topic is reviewed extensively in this authoritative text on current and emerging techniques.Part one deals with analytical techniques applied to food authentication. There are chapters on both established and developing technologies, as well as discussions of chemometrics and data handling. Part two relates these methodologies to particular food and beverage products, such as meat, dairy products, cereals and wine. In part three traceability is reviewed in detail, looking at the development of efficient traceability systems and their application in practice to such areas as animal fe...
