Les recueils de miracles mariaux du monastère hiéronymite de Guadalupe rassemblent des textes qui, bien que rédigés par les religieux du sanctuaire, permettent d'entendre la voix de la inmensa mayoría - les gens du commun, les obscurs, les illettrés -, fait exceptionnel pour cette époque. C'est donc une sorte de mémoire religieuse collective qui se constitue, dans laquelle pèlerinages et miracles apparaissent comme les ressorts essentiels du culte de la Vierge de Guadalupe. Analysés aussi bien comme formes littéraires que comme sources documentaires, ces textes permettent d'appréhender le vécu religieux. Ils aident à saisir de façon concrète les liens entre religiosité populaire et gouvernement de l'Église. Dans la politique d'enregistrement des miracles comme dans l'inflexion des pratiques de dévotion apparaissent ainsi clairement les problèmes débattus lors du concile de Trente, tandis que la force d'un sentiment religieux caractérisé par une attente constante du merveilleux met à mal les cadres de la religion officielle.
