O romance acompanha os passos de Maria Carolina da Silva, uma escrava nascida em 1711 que testemunha juntamente com a família Fontenelle ( dona dela) o desmembramento de Minas Gerais da capitania de São Paulo em 12 de setembro de 1720 devido à revolta de Vila Rica e a Inconfidência Mineira, entre outros fatos históricos desse período da História do Brasil e de Minas Gerais. Ela também conheceu alguns dos inconfidentes como Tiradentes e Cláudio Manoel da Costa e constrói uma amizade com eles.
