Journey to Albania

Over the last ten years, Albania has undergone rapid development, becoming a well-recognised tourist destination within the Mediterranean region. Tourism represents one of the most significant opportunities for the country and – at the same time – a challenge for a developing nation and emerging economy – especially if we take into account an isolationist period of more than forty years during the social-communist dictatorship. This book aims to provide a base for discussion about the impact of tourism on the Albanian territory – firstly from a historical point of view, and secondly to observe a specific case study and analyse its impact. This book is a journey to Albania, looking at architecture, explorations, and landscapes from the traveller's perspective. Inevitably this will include other academic fields, such as geography, history, and spatial planning, and will also recognise the contested Italian influence as an additional layer of complexity in Albania's 20th century.

This volume introduces an innovative tool for the development of sustainable cities and the promotion of the quality of life of city inhabitants. It presents a decision-support system to orient public administrations in identifying development scenarios for sustainable urban and territorial transformations. The authors have split the volume into five parts, which respectively describe the theoretical basis of the book, the policies in question and indicators that influence them, the decision-support system that connects indicators to policies, the case study of Ancona, Italy, and potential future directions for this work. This volume is based on transdisciplinary research completed in May 2016 that involved about 40 researchers at The University of Camerino, Italy and other European universities. With purchase of this book, readers will also have access to Electronic Supplementary Material that contains a database with groups of indicators of assessment of urban quality of life and a toolkit containing the data processing system and management information system used in the book’s case study.

Forest Urbanisms

A radical redefinition of how humanity occupies the earth — through forests, agriculture, and settlement — and rearticulates environmental stewardship by intertwining ecologies and urbanisms, this publication brings together essays by scholars in forestry, urbanism and other disciplines, designers, practitioners and policy makers. It explores the multifaceted notion of forest urbanisms, including a conceptual framing essay; contributions from the sciences such as bioscience engineering, architecture, urbanism and public policy; contemporary forest urbanism projects and explorative essays that make tangible an agenda for the 21st century. With descriptions of both built and non-built projects from around the globe, the essays show how such projects substantiate a radical shift in humankind’s occupation of the world, where ecologies and urbanisms converge and agriculture, forests, and settlements are integrated. Forest Urbanisms extends growing research on a new nature–culture relationship, the necessity for trees in cities, and a rebalancing of ecology and urbanism.

Cities & Rivers

A selection of architecture, landscape and urbanism works from aldayjover | architecture and landscape, an office based in Barcelona, Spain and Virginia in the United States. A collection of projects -- designed from their local and territorial DNA -- that respond in new ways to the global socio-ecological crisis in which we have been in engaged with since the beginning of the 21st century. Featured works include public spaces, architecture and urban studies that incorporate natural dynamics and that also emphasize -- recovering in some cases -- legal access among all citizens and equal access to the city and its opportunities. The works presented are particularly renowned given their leadership role in a new approach to the relationship between cities and rivers, in which natural dynamics become part of the public space, eliminating the effect of “catastrophe”.
