Sex and the State
Abortion, divorce, and the family: how did the state make policy decisions in these areas in Argentina, Brazil, and Chile during the last third of the twentieth century? As the three countries transitioned from democratic to authoritarian forms of government (and back), they confronted challenges posed by the rise of the feminist movement, social changes, and the power of the Catholic Church. The results were often surprising: women's rights were expanded under military dictatorships, divorce was legalized in authoritarian Brazil but not in democratic Chile, and no Latin American country changed its laws on abortion. Discutir o aborto no Brasil é discutir muito mais que o direito de interromper uma gestação. É debater um fato que ocorre na vida de uma a cada 7 mulheres, de acordo com Débora Diniz, mas que gera consequências fatais para apenas uma parte dessas mulheres, coincidentemente (ou não) aquelas que mais precisam de uma atuação do estado em razão de sua vulnerabilidade. O aborto existe e é praticado, na maior parte das vezes na clandestinidade. A sua descriminalização não deve aumentar sua incidência, mas certamente reduzirá drasticamente as mortes maternas. Se a criminalização do aborto é uma política de morte, sua descriminalização salva vidas.
