After Fascism
The volume offers compelling examples of recent scholarship addressing various aspects of how European societies came to terms with, or chose to overlook, their experiences under fascism. Included are studies of significant regional diversity: France, Spain, Hungary, the Netherlands, Denmark, Italy, Germany and Austria, as well as transnational themes. Each essay advances its own particular thematic and methodological approach, from everyday life experiences to political culture, educational reform, family history and memory, diplomatic relations, the work of international governmental organizations, and a case study involving an economic institution. The shared perspective of the authors is the analysis of the different and various ways in which the fascist past cast a shadow over societies after fascism.
The Americanization/Westernization of Austria
Political, economic, social, and cultural modernization dramatically transformed twentieth-century Austria. Innovative new methods of production and management, such as the assembly line, changed Austrian business after World War I, much as the Marshall Plan shaped the economy after World War II. The Policies of Reproduction at the Turn of the 21st Century
This pathbreaking volume on gender studies contains contributions from 15 international scholars in six countries on the topic of reproduction policies. It combines an analysis of child care policies with one of procreative policies for each country. From various fields of study around the world, the contributors present new research from many perspectives. However the combination of two research perspectives provides innovative insights into the relationship between family, gender, and population policies. Apart from the emphasis on single countries, the book also provides general conclusions on politics, medical science, and society on the still controversial topic of reproduction policies.
Lebensborn Maternity Home Wienerwald, 1938–1945
Established in Pernitz/Feichtenbach in 1938, the Heim Wienerwald served the SS association Lebensborn as a maternity home to increase the birth rate of "Aryan" children. This volume brings together recent research on the history of the Heim Wienerwald based upon unique sources: the articles focus on the maternity home in the wider context of National Socialist racial policy, presenting findings on the regulations for keeping births within Lebensborn secret, the requirements for admission to Lebensborn, and the assessment of mother and child. Secondly, the volume examines everyday life in this facility and the extent to which the stay of pregnant women and mothers was regulated in the context of National Socialist ideology. Thirdly, it provides an insight into the experiences and everyday life of the staff , especially the student nurses. Fourthly, the volume deals with the children born in the Heim Wienerwald who did not meet the "selection criteria" of the SS and were murdered as part of the National Socialist child "euthanasia" programme.

The last third of the 19th century witnessed a considerable increase in the active participation of women in the various Christian missions. Katharina Stornig focusses onthe Catholic case, and particularly explores the activities and experiences of German missionary nuns, the so-called Servants of the Holy Spirit,in colonial Togo and New Guinea in the late 19th and first half of the 20th centuries. Gender and Protest
For centuries women and other “gendered minorities” had to protest to gain equality. Their demands were often matched by counter-protest from conservative forces within historical societies that intended to return to “old orders” or “good old times.” The present volume will take a closer look at the interrelationship between gender and protest and analyze in detail how gender-related perspectives stimulated protests and initiated historical changes.
