Mobilities and Cosmopolitanisms in African and Afrodiasporic Literatures
In Mobilities and Cosmopolitanisms in African and Afrodiasporic Literatures, Anna-Leena Toivanen explores the representations and relationship of mobilities and cosmopolitanisms in Franco- and Anglophone African and Afrodiasporic literary texts from the 1990s to the 2010s. Representations of mobility practices are discussed against three categories of cosmopolitanism reflecting the privileged, pragmatic, and critical aspects of the concept. The main scientific contribution of Toivanen’s book is its attempt to enhance dialogue between postcolonial literary studies and mobilities research. The book criticises reductive understandings of ‘mobility’ as a synonym for migration, and problematises frequently made links between mobility and cosmopolitanism. Mobilities and Cosmopolitanisms adopts a comparative approach to Franco- and Anglophone African and Afrodiasporic literatures, often discussed separately despite their common themes and parallel paths.
Forceful Creation in Harsh Terrain
Bessie Head (1937-1986) was born in South Africa, but wrote her novels when living as a refugee in Botswana. In her 'trilogy': When Rain Clouds Gather (1969), Maru (1971) and A Question of Power (1973), she explores the stranger's desire for inclusion. Current feminist and postcolonial theory makes metaphorical use of the lack of belonging in searching for new expressions of subjectivity. This study looks to Head's novels for their contribution to that debate, but places them firmly within the historical context of Southern Africa in the late twentieth century. Both the politics of location and the desire for universality are seen as informing Head's texts. The analysis shows that Head's most distinctive contribution lies in her use of 'place' as a means of encompassing change as well as the nourishing soil necessary for the creation of a stable identity.

The idea of African Otherness has occupied a central role in discourses on cultural production in Africa, whether film, literature, music or the arts. These claims, articulated both by ‘Western' and ‘African' critics and consumers, means that particular criteria and standards are adopted in relation to cultural production in Africa. The claim to African Otherness is gaining new strength in the wake of globalization, but it is also increasingly challenged by a number of contemporary artists. This book deals with the question of relevance and meaning of the signifier in various fields of contemporary cultural production in Africa.

The Relationship Between Individual and Family in the Caribbean Novel
The book studies the relationship between ?Individual and Family? on the broader sense which is explored in the 19 Caribbean novels are divided into four decades(1950?s to 1980?s) which contributes valuably to the comprehension of the Caribbean phenomenon of ?identity?. In the Caribbean context (West Indian context), the struggle for ?identity? is in essence, a struggle for meaningful relatedness or the sameness with others as human beings, within a society compelled by history into racial and cultural hybridization on the one hand, and the social, economic and political stratification, on the other. The book focuses on psychological and sociological Caribbean context which is different from usual context of understanding.
