Third Language Learners
The book aims to provide a bridge between two applied linguistics subfields, namely those of interlanguage pragmatics and third language acquisition. It examines the production and identification of request acts formulas on the part of bilingual learners of English in the Valencian Community (Spain). Previous to the empirical study itself, we present an overview of the theoretical background and the sociolinguistic context where the experiment was conducted.

Learning how to Request in an Instructed Language Learning Context
Interlanguage Pragmatics (ILP) is a field of growing interest. Focussing on the speech act of requesting, the volume provides information about opportunities for pragmatic learning and how pragmatics can be integrated into instructional foreign language learning contexts. In addition, the research reported here provides methodological insights for those interested in investigating ILP from a second language acquisition perspective. Conflict Talk in English as a Lingua Franca
This volume aims to fill two gaps in pragmatic research into English as a lingua franca (ELF): the investigation of conflict talk and the incorporation of a multimodal perspective into the analysis of ELF interactions. To this end, multimodal conversation analysis is used, combined with the perspective of politeness theory. The author shows how interactants use multimodal resources to manage competitive overlaps, disagreement, and third-party complaints in casual ELF conversations among friends. In doing so, the notion of cooperativeness is re-examined, and the appropriateness of an intercultural approach to analyzing multimodal resources in ELF interactions is demonstrated.
