The story of how four young bohemians on the make - Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Mimi Baez, and Richard Farina - converged in Greenwich Village, fell into love, and invented a sound and a style that are one of the most lasting legacies of the 1960s When Bob Dylan, age twenty-five, wrecked his motorcycle on the side of a road near Woodstock in 1966 and dropped out of the public eye, he was recognized as a genius, a youth idol, and the authentic voice of the counterculture: and Greenwich Village, where he first made his mark as a protest singer with an acid wit and a barbwire throat, was unquestionably the center of youth culture. So embedded are Dylan and the Village in the legend of the Sixties--on...
Africa’s Development Dynamics uses lessons learned in the continent’s five regions – Central, East, North, Southern and West Africa – to develop policy recommendations and share good practices. Drawing on the most recent statistics, this analysis of development dynamics attempts to help African leaders reach the targets of the African Union’s Agenda 2063 at all levels: continental, regional, national and local.
The first book to apply economic theory to the analysis of all aspects of organised crime.
If monetary policy is to aim also at financial stability, how would it change? To analyze this question, this paper develops a general-form framework. Financial stability objectives are shown to make monetary policy more aggressive: in reaction to negative shocks, cuts are deeper but shorter-lived than otherwise. By keeping cuts brief, monetary policy tightens as soon as bank risk appetite heats up. Within this shorter time span, cuts must then be deeper than otherwise to also achieve standard objectives. Finally, we analyze how robust this result is to the presence of a bank regulatory tool, and provide a parameterized example.
Argentina’s new Civil and Commercial Code Código Civil y Comercial de la Nación has led to the adoption of a number of modern institutions in several branches of law. This book provides a review of them identifying the basic legal sources and concepts of Argentinian law as it stands today. It offers an up-to-date, systematic, and critical rendition of the principal branches of the law and provides the necessary historical background. With twelve chapters written by Argentinian experts in their respective fields of law, this is the ideal starting point for research whenever a question of Argentinian law must be answered. The authors clearly explain the legal customs, provisions, and rules...
In general, a reduction in trade barriers will affect the environment by expanding the scale of economic activity, by altering the composition of economic activity and by initiating a change in the techniques of production. We present empirical evidence to assess the relative magnitudes of these three effects as they apply to further trade liberalization in Mexico. We first use comparable measures of three air pollutants in a cross-section of urban areas located in 42 countries to study the relationship between air quality and economic growth. We find for two pollutants (sulphur dioxide and 'smoke') that concentrations increase with per capita GDP at low levels of national income, but decrea...

Rosslin's Der Swangern frawen und he bammen roszgarten (1513) is frequently cited by historians, both positively and (more often) negatively, as a milestone in the professionalization of obstetrics and gynecology. While the subject of whether the book led to an improvement in midwifery is open to debate, there is no argument that it was the beginning of the male medical profession's move into the female domain of midwifery. This newly translated version (a previous, poor English version appeared in 1540) includes a long introduction setting book and author into their historic context.
