In what is destined to prove the definitive text for the present generation on the political, economic, and social structure of Colombia, Jorge Pablo Osterling explores the enigmatic nature of this special, even critical, anchor to the northern tier of South America. In many ways, Colombia is a huge success story: it is one of the oldest, most stable, functioning democracies; the land is blessed with rich and diversified resources and products; and its foreign debt has been kept in check as a consequence of sound economic management. But despite its positive social, cultural, economic, and political indicators, Colombia has been a nation beset by serious problems: overt corruption and unemplo...

Why the Victims Law Applies to Me is an analysis of Colombian political philosophy, based on the authors own experiences, and departs from a specific historical context and liberal approach. The author presents a new approach to Latin Americans and Colombians realities, and denounces the misrepresentations of Colombias History, past and present. He also proposes solutions and a development platform to envision a future with optimism. Jaramillo reveals the current and past perpetrators of the violence in Colombia, denounces the public servants that plunder the countrys institutions, and relentlessly calls for the need for the State to provide Ethical and Moral education through mandatory scho...

Indian and Slave Royalists in the Age of Revolution

Marcela Echeverri draws a picture of the royalist region of Popayán (modern-day Colombia) that reveals deep chronological layers and multiple social and spatial textures. She uses royalism as a lens to rethink the temporal, spatial, and conceptual boundaries that conventionally structure historical narratives about the Age of Revolution.

China in Argentina

This is the first book to shed light on the growing presence, influence and expansion of China in the daily life of Argentina. While most previous academic studies focus on the geopolitical and macroeconomics dimensions of the relations between Argentina and China, this book shows at a micro-social level the multiple facets of the economic, political and social influence of China in Argentina. The book presents ethnographic studies of encounters of actors and negotiation of identities from Argentina and China in companies, schools, restaurants, hospitals, districts, public and private institutions in Argentina. Themes discussed in the ethnographies include: identity struggle and strategic uses of culture in Buenos Aires' s Chinatown; teaching Chinese as the first foreign language or teaching it as a heritage language in a bilingual school; the contested production of images of Chinese authenticity in Chinese restaurants; the connections and contestations between so-called “Western medicine” and so-called “Chinese Traditional Medicine”; and the conflictive relations between Chinese expatriate bosses of Chinese state-owned enterprises and their Argentinean employees.

Corruption from a Regulatory Perspective

Corruption from a Regulatory Perspective

  • Categories: Law

This book seeks to enrich and, in some cases, reverse current ideas on corruption and its prevention. It is a long held belief that sanctions are the best guard against corrupt practise. This innovative work argues that in some cases sanctions paradoxically increase corruption and that controls provide opportunities for corrupt transactions. Instead it suggests that better regulation and responsive enforcement, not sanctions, offer the most effective response to corruption. Taking both a theoretical and applied approach, it examines the question from a global perspective, drawing on in particular a regulatory perspective, to provide a model for tackling corrupt practises.
