The Reformation is often alluded to as Gutenberg’s child. Could it then be said that the Counter-Reformation was his step-child? The close relationship between the Reformation, the printing press and books has received extensive, historiographical attention, which is clearly justified; however, the links between books and the Catholic world have often been limited to a tale of censorship and repression. The current volume looks beyond this, with a series of papers that aim to shed new light on the complex relationships between Catholicism and books during the early modern period, before and after the religious schism, with special focus on trade, common reads and the mechanisms used to control readership in different territories, together with the similarities between the Catholic and the Protestant worlds. Soon after the fall of the Aztec empire in 1521, missionaries began teaching Latin to native youths in Mexico. This initiative was intended to train indigenous students for positions of leadership, but it led some of them to produce significant writings of their own in Latin, and to translate a wide range of literature, including Aesop's fables, into their native language. Aztec Latin reveals the full extent to which the first Mexican authors mastered and made use of European learning and provides a timely reassessment of what those indigenous authors really achieved.
Este terceiro volume, decorrente das várias sessões que se realizaram no Departamento de Línguas e Culturas da Universidade de Aveiro, inseridas no Ciclo de Conferências “Do manuscrito ao livro impresso e eletrónico” (quinta e sexta edições), vem dar seguimento aos dois anteriores, em que nos propusemos promover a investigação e divulgação científica na área da História do Livro e da Edição, no âmbito das atividades curriculares da Licenciatura em Línguas e Estudos Editoriais e do Mestrado em Estudos Editoriais do Departamento de Línguas e Culturas da Universidade de Aveiro. Um dos principais objetivos da realização deste projeto de cariz científico-pedagógico continua a ser o de fomentar e aprofundar a articulação entre investigação e ensino, proporcionando aos alunos do primeiro e do segundo ciclos um contacto privilegiado com diferentes especialistas, peritos em matérias relacionadas com a história da edição e com a produção editorial. Ademais, o desenvolvimento desta iniciativa vem estreitando e consolidando a já longa e profícua cooperação entre o Departamento de Línguas e Culturas e a Imprensa da Universidade de Coimbra.
