Being-With in Contemporary Performing Arts

Being-With in Contemporary Performing Arts

The concept of being-with developed by the philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy asks a fundamental question about human life, inasmuch as we have always been and will be co-existent with people and environments. All modes of sense-making and subjectivation, but also presence, can only occur within a context and through interaction. This is why historical forms of theater have frequently been viewed as sites of communality and why critical approaches have questioned concepts such as 'sense', 'meaning' and 'habitus'. Like literature, theater has also inherited the scene of myth: It satisfies our need for narration, interpretation and to share in something. In turn, the joint creation of meaning in scenic practices is also part of the traditional idealization of the theater – but is this ideal purely mythical? The authors of this book investigate and explore how meaning is being questioned or liberated in contemporary performances, and how individual thinking/action can be articulated to others, paving the way for other gestures, theatrical processes of recognition and the performative sharing process (of sense-making).

This book describes a novel and proven approach to cytologically classify urinary samples for the detection of bladder cancer and lesions of the upper urinary tract. The new method is based on the collective experience of knowledgeable cytopathologists who have tested the terminology within their own laboratories for reproducibility and predictability of neoplasms of the urinary tract. Accompanying the written criteria for each diagnostic category are meticulously photographed exemplars of the cellular features, with cogently annotated descriptions of the photographs. The book thereby performs as an atlas for microscopists involved in diagnostic cytopathology at all levels of their education...

German(ic) in language contact

It is well-known that contact between speakers of different languages or varieties leads to dynamics in many respects. From a grammatical perspective, especially contact between closely related languages/varieties fosters contact-induced innovations. The evaluation of such innovations reveals speakers’ attitudes and is in turn an important aspect of the sociolinguistic dynamics linked to language contact. In this volume, we assemble studies on such settings where typologically congruent languages are in contact, i.e. language contact within the Germanic branch of the Indo-European language family. Languages involved include Afrikaans, Danish, English, Frisian, (Low and High) German, and Yi...

Spanish in Africa/Africa in Spanish

Since the 1960s, Afro-Hispanic linguistics has produced vital knowledge at the intersection of African diaspora studies and Spanish sociolinguistics – yet many misconceptions persist in research literature. To challenge those biased assumptions, the contributions gathered in this volume present current research on Afro-Hispanic varieties from both sides of the Atlantic (Equatorial Guinean Spanish, Palenquero, Afro-Puerto Rican Spanish from Loíza, San Andrean [Colombia] Raizal Spanish) and address the influence of Portuguese-based Creoles on Afro-Hispanic varieties during the early colonial era. Conceived in cooperation with students, activists, social workers, civil servants, and research...
