Head of Medusa

Two school students, Sofía and Lupe, are sexually assaulted in the early hours, after a fancy-dress dinner. They now have to face the choice whether to press charges, and the reaction of their schoolmates. Will people be prepared to look them in the eye, or will they avert their gaze, in case they are turned to stone, as in the myth of Medusa?

Miranda's parents, Asterius and Melina, run a tavern in Syracuse, a historic city on the Italian island of Sicily. They are immigrants from Crete, which they had to leave in a hurry, never to return. One of their customers is a blind man called Polyeuphemius, who is almost a member of the family, but they are wary of another customer, Olysseus, who traffics in ancient artefacts and will stop at nothing to get what he wants. One day, Miranda bumps into Antelmo, a schoolmate who is now a fisherman and has grown into a bit of a hunk. Antelmo invites her to join the League of Gorgons, an organization that endeavours to prevent Sicily's cultural heritage from being pillaged. This will lead her to...

Argumentation in Science Education

Educational researchers are bound to see this as a timely work. It brings together the work of leading experts in argumentation in science education. It presents research combining theoretical and empirical perspectives relevant for secondary science classrooms. Since the 1990s, argumentation studies have increased at a rapid pace, from stray papers to a wealth of research exploring ever more sophisticated issues. It is this fact that makes this volume so crucial.

The Arthur of the Iberians

This book fills the Iberian linguistic and geographical gap in Arthurian studies, replacing the now-outdated work by William J. Entwistle (1925). It covers Arthurian material in all the major Peninsular Romance languages (Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, Galician); it follows the spread of Arthurian material overseas with the seaborne expansion of Spain and Portugal from Iberia into America and Asia in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries; and, as well as examining the specifically Arthurian texts themselves, it traces the continued influence of the medieval Arthurian material and its impact on the society, literature and culture of the Golden Age and beyond, including its presence in Don Quixote, the influential Spanish Arthurian-inspired romance Amadís de Gaula, and in Spanish ballads. Such was its influence that we find an indigenous American woman called ‘Iseo’ (Iseult); and an Arthurian story appeared in an indigenous language of the Philippines, Tagalog, as late as the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Mudanzas e outros velenos

Intercultural communication is a daily occurrence for most people, as a result of transnational population flows and globalized media. The contributions to this volume propose reconceptualizations of orthodox accounts of intercultural communication based on supposed national cultural characteristics. They approach the subject from a variety of angles, including intercultural communication training, the role of power in intercultural negotiations, the linguistic situation in Europe, and the conflict between nationalist and transnational discourses in literature. The articles consider the need for a revision of the notions of culture and communication given multicultural and multilingual envir...
