The Maritime and Coastguard Agency's Response to Growth in the UK Merchant Fleet

This report focuses on how the Maritime and Coastguard Agency has responded to growth in the UK registered merchant shipping fleet. The Agency is responsible for maintaining the safety, security and environmental standards of commercial vessels flying the UK flag. In 2000, the Government introduced tonnage tax as part of package of measures designed to reverse the long-term decline in the UK registered merchant shipping fleet. Tonnage tax allows a company operating a vessel controlled from the UK to opt to pay tax on the basis of its tonnage rather than the profit on the vessel's trading activities. Since then the number of merchant vessels joining the UK Ship Register has increased from 1,0...

It details the principles and procedures that coast guard officers are required to follow in the course of international law at sea by examining treaties, conventions, international rulings, and theories. Marine fuel sulphur record book

Essential for all vessels who wish to enter an Emission Control Area, are at berth in a United Kingdom port, or a UK passenger ship operating in UK waters and controlled waters or any other passenger ship which calls at a port in the UK. The Merchant Shipping (prevention of Air Pollution from Ships) Regulation 2008, as amended, require that the master of a ship to which the regulations apply make a record to demonstrate compliance for any ship using separate fuel oils and make a record of any fuel changeover operation. The master of a ship to which the regulations apply is required to make a record: (a) in the case of a UK ship, in a log book in the format prescribed in Appendix 6 to Merchant Shipping Notice 1819 (M+F); (b) in the case of any other ship, in a ship's log book. This log book has been approved by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency for use on United Kingdom ships when recording the use of maritime fuel oil in accordance with the requirements of Annex VI of MARPOL and for ships at berth in United Kingdom ports in accordance with EU Directive 199/32/EC, as amended by Directive 2005/33/EC regarding the sulphur content of marine fuels.

Grey and White Hulls

This book undertakes an in-depth examination of the diversity in international approaches to the navy-coastguard nexus. It considers the evolving global maritime security landscape and the emergence and proliferation of maritime law enforcement agencies—collectively referred to here as “coastguards”—performing peacetime constabulary duties alongside navies. Through a cross-regional study of various countries worldwide, including those in Asia and Europe, this book reveals that there is no one optimal, “one size fits all” organizational structure. Instead, there is a wide array of drivers that influence a nation-state’s maritime security architecture and its organizational approach to managing security at sea, or broadly speaking, securing its national maritime interests.

Seafarers play a key role in the success of the maritime industries, yet their welfare can be neglected. Seafarers are employed in a unique workplace, featuring prolonged social isolation, fatigue and with limited services. The suicide rate for seafarers is higher than in the general population and there is a financial cost for ship owners. These publications will fill an important gap in the current portfolio. The aim of the title is to provide practical guidance for optimal care of seafarers, ultimately improving seafarer wellbeing and, in turn, business efficiency onboard vessels.
