A COLLECTION OF ESSAYS ON THE HISTORY, MEANING AND MATERIALITY OF THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT There is a blue hole in environmental history. In Current Maritime Issues and the International Maritime Organization, leading experts thoughtfully consider the most pressing issues confronting the International Maritime Organization, as the IMO celebrates its fiftieth anniversary. The papers in this publication were originally presented at the Twenty-Third Annual Seminar of the Center for Oceans Law and Policy (COLP), University of Virginia School of Law, an event co-hosted with the IMO in January, 1999, at its headquarters in London. Subjects covered were maritime safety, marine environmental protection, flag State implementation and port State control, IMO's interface with the Law of the Sea Convention, IMO Legal Committee work, and broader questions of IMO regulations and oceans policy. Historical and Oceanographic Influences on Phylogeography in the California Current Ecosystem and Applications to Management of Marine Species
The overarching theme of my thesis is to explore patterns of larval dispersal as they relate to management of fished marine species. I employed a case study of two species: Megastraea undosa and Parastichopus parvimensis to investigate patterns of phylogeography and assess relative scales of dispersal for these two species which are fished in both California, USA and Baja California, MEX. To examine how some generalities for many species can be made for a specific geographic area, I reviewed all existing phylogeographic studies around Cape Mendocino, CA. Great Power Clashes along the Maritime Silk Road
Current concerns in maritime Eurasia are centered on rising powers China and India. By way of background to understanding the current regional great power rivalry within maritime Eurasia, this book asks what we can learn from historic Eurasian maritime geopolitical players and their interactions that will inform and enlighten today’s international relations practitioners. Great Power Clashes along the Maritime Silk Road examines three seminal historical cases of maritime clashes in the China Seas, four in the Indian Ocean, and one in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Each of these is an example of local or regional conflict reflecting the circumstances of time and place. The cases have been chosen to provide a comparative framework of significant premodern maritime clashes distributed along the full Eurasian maritime perimeter. Lessons include understanding struggles between continental and maritime powers in Eurasia, and understanding the decisive impact that naval leadership, intelligence, technology, alliances, and identity have had in the past and will have on the future.
