The History of Karate and the Masters Who Made It

A concise yet comprehensive history of traditional Okinawan and Japanese karate, with biographies of the great karate masters This concise-yet-comprehensive history of traditional Okinawan and Japanese karate includes authoritative biographies of the great karate masters of the past and the philosophical issues they faced as karate changed and evolved. Bringing a fresh understanding to the study of the martial arts, Mark I. Cramer dispels many of the often-repeated martial-arts myths as he details the lineages of the modern styles of karate and describes the social, cultural, and political events that influenced them. While most books focus on a single style of karate or the biography of just one of the great teachers, this book offers a well-researched and detailed overview. By bringing all of this knowledge together in one volume, Cramer—an award-winning inductee into the USA Karate Federation’s Hall of Fame—fills a crucial gap.

Mark Cramer has earned praise for both his horse racing and travel books. With Handicapping on the Road, he combines both realms. Last summer, Cramer, then 65 years old, set out on a 1,000-kilometer bicycle - race track journey through several regions of France, along with his companion, Alan, 59, a specialist in Asian art. The immediate goal was to raise money for the retirement of race horses, but Cramer was also using his handicapping methods, attempting to pay for the trip with his betting. Along the way, Mark and Alan would test their own stamina, sometimes in blistering heat. To make a point, they chose the same 21 days as the Tour de France (two old-timers "competing" with Tour professionals). Cramer also vowed to cover the more than 600 miles with zero carbon emissions (unless you count the carbon dioxide the cyclers breathed out heavily on strenuous hills). The Loire wines along the way served as performance dis-enhancing substances, adding to the challenge. Handicapping on the Road includes enough intriguing horse betting methods to satisfy Cramer's loyal fans, but the travel adventure, stamina test and ecological challenge make the story all the more fascinating.

Mark Cramer is at his happiest in the dim light of the off-track betting parlor, where the flickering glow of the racetrack monitors dances to the low, steady rumble of the race caller's voice. Most handicappers underachieve because they play too many races and are obsessed with picking winners as opposed to identifying and backing only those horses that are underbet in proportion to their chances of winning. In this pioneering book Cramer shows handicappers how to create their own personal odds lines and then use them to identify which, if any, horses are overlayed and worth betting in any given race.
