′Bara and Pennington′s edited volume successfully fills a huge void in the market for introductory textbooks to comparative politics which previously offered either descriptions of political processes and systems or overviews of the methodology of comparative analysis. By applying major political science theories to overviews of the core elements of political systems, the authors both enhance our understanding of these elements and provide readers an excellent introduction to comparative explanation′ - Dr David Howarth, University of Edinburgh ′What is distinctive about this authoritative and comprehensive book on comparative politics is the way in which it is underpinned throughout ...

Robust Political Economy

Robust Political Economy

This important book offers a comprehensive defence of classical liberalism against contemporary challenges. It sets out an analytical framework of 'robust political economy' that explores the economic and political problems that arise from the phenomena of imperfect knowledge and imperfect incentives. Using this framework, the book defends the classical liberal focus on markets and the minimal state from the critiques presented by 'market failure' economics and communitarian and egalitarian variants of political theory. Mark Pennington expertly applies the lessons learned from responding to these challenges in the context of contemporary discussions surrounding the welfare state, internation...

Planning and the Political Market argues that the enthusiasm for planning as an essential component of environmental protection is misplaced. Drawing on the experience of Britain and other Western democracies, the author uses public choice theory to explore the practical experience of land use planning as an example of government failure. The book opens by outlining the institutional focus of public choice theory, examining the central questions of market and government failure and the theoretical case for government intervention in the environment. Having explored the principal impacts of planning the book goes on to analyse the institutional structures which have produced these policy outcomes. The analysis suggests that institutional incentives within the 'political market' have frequently led to policies which favour special interest groups and public sector bureaucracy. The book concludes with an assessment of the potential for a private property rights, free market alternative to increase community involvement and access.

A long-lost Predator clan stakes its claim for galactic dominance, intent on exterminating its rival clan, the self-same trophy hunters who have plagued Earth's history. And if the advanced technology and military precision of this new threat weren't enough, they have an even more terrifying weapon—a horde of Aliens under their malefic control. Earthmen must now side with the warriors who have relentlessly hunted them, but is the enemy of my enemy my friend or just another enemy waiting for its turn to strike? * One of the most popular science-fiction/action franchises, spawning countless films, games, comics, and toys over three decades. * Aliens vs. Predator: Three World War is the biggest action blowout yet, written by original AvP scribe Randy Stradley and illustrated by Rick Leonardi and Mark Pennington. * Collects issues #1-#6 of the miniseries.

Reforming Land-use Planning

The conventional wisdom in land use planning circles is that the 1947 Town and Country Planning Acts represent the most important step forward in the history of British land use planning. This is not a view that is based on systematic evaluation and, as this paper argues, there are good reasons for believing it to be misplaced. The problems with the land use planning system are analogous to those previously experienced with a number of the nationalised industries. Just as many of those industries failed to deliver economic efficiency or, often, even a service to customers - so nationalised land development rights and the large element of administrative discretion in land use planning do not seem to be delivering results in a way that is either cost-effective or in line with what people actually want.

This book examines the complex relationships between social capital, markets and democracy. It argues that participation in markets positively enriches and enhances the stock of social capital, while, conversely, democratic politics may undermine it by facilitating divisive rent-seeking by special interest groups.
