A significant body of theoretical and empirical studies describes 'sense of place' as an outcome of interconnected psychological, social and environmental processes in relation to physical place(s). Sense of place has been examined, particularly in human geography, in terms of both the character intrinsic to a place as a localized, bounded and material entity, and the sentiments of attachment/detachment that humans experience and express in relation to specific places. Scholars in a wide range of disciplines are increasingly exploring the relationship between place and health, and recently, the field of public health has been encouraged to recognize sense of place as a potential contributing factor to well-being. It is evident that over the last few decades, sense of place has developed into a versatile construct. This important book brings together work related to sense of place and health, broadly defined, from the perspective of a variety of fields and disciplines. It will give the reader an understanding of both the range of applications of this construct within approaches to human health as well as the breadth of research methodologies employed in its investigation.

Hidden Geographies

This book defines and discusses the term “hidden geographies” in two ways: systematically and by presenting a variety of examples of the research fields and topics concerning hidden geographies, with the aim of stimulating further basic and applied research in this area. While the term is quite rarely used in the scientific literature (more often as a figure of speech than to illustrate or problematize its deeper meaning), we argue that hidden geographies are everywhere and many of them have significant impacts on (other) natural and social phenomena and processes, subsequently triggering changes, for example in landscape, economy, culture, health or quality of life. The introductory sec...

The Palgrave Handbook of Digital and Public Humanities

This handbook brings together recent international scholarship and developments in the interdisciplinary fields of digital and public humanities. Exploring key concepts, theories, practices and debates within both the digital and public humanities, the handbook also assesses how these two areas are increasingly intertwined. Key questions of access, ownership, authorship and representation link the individual sections and contributions. The handbook includes perspectives from the Global South and presents scholarship and practice that engage with a multiplicity of underrepresented ‘publics’, including LGBTQ+ communities, ethnic and linguistic minorities, the incarcerated and those affected by personal or collective trauma. Chapter “The Role of Digital and Public Humanities in Confronting the Past: Survivors’ of Ireland’s Magdalene Laundries Truth Telling’” is available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com.

Place Naming, Identities and Geography

This book presents research on geographical naming on land and sea from a wide range of standpoints on: theory and concepts, case studies and education. Space and place naming or toponymy has a long tradition in the sciences and a renewed critical interest in geography and allied disciplines including the humanities. Place: location and cartographical aspects, etymology and geo-histories so salient in past studies, are now being enhanced from a range of radical perspectives, especially in a globalizing, standardizing world with Googlization and the consequent ‘normalization’ of place names, perceptions and images worldwide including those for marketing purposes. Nonetheless, there are conflicting and contesting voices. The interdisciplinary research is enhanced with authors from regional, national and international toponymy-related institutions and organizations including the UNGEGN, IGU, ICA and so forth.

Urban Sprawl in Europe

Urban sprawl is one of the most important types of land-use changes currently affecting Europe. It increasingly creates major impacts on the environment (via surface sealing, emissions by transport and ecosystem fragmentation); on the social structure of an area (by segregation, lifestyle changes and neglecting urban centres); and on the economy (via distributed production, land prices, and issues of scale). Urban Sprawl in Europe: landscapes, land-use change & policy explains the nature and dynamics of urban sprawl. The book is written in three parts. Part I considers contemporary definitions, theories and trends in European urban sprawl. In part II authors draw upon experiences from across...

Preteklost in prihodnost

Knjiga Preteklost in prihodnost je 16. v zbirki GIS v Sloveniji in obeležuje njeno 30. obletnico izdajanja. V knjigi so prikazani rezultati projektov in izsledki raziskav s področij, kot so geologija, geomorfologija, hidrologija, pedologija, kmetijstvo, naravne nesreče, varovanje okolja, geografija, geodezija, arheologija, promet, telekomunikacijska infrastruktura, turizem, kulturna dediščina, izobraževanje, kartografija, zemljepisna imena, daljinsko zaznavanje in druga. Bralci v knjigi najdejo nekatere novosti v uporabnosti geografskih informacijskih sistemov, hkrati pa lahko seznanijo tudi z zanimivi rezultati raziskovalnega dela na številnih področjih.
