This third open access volume of the handbook series deals with accelerator physics, design, technology and operations, as well as with beam optics, dynamics and diagnostics. A joint CERN-Springer initiative, the "Particle Physics Reference Library" provides revised and updated contributions based on previously published material in the well-known Landolt-Boernstein series on particle physics, accelerators and detectors (volumes 21A,B1,B2,C), which took stock of the field approximately one decade ago. Central to this new initiative is publication under full open access.

After a historical consideration of the types and evolution of accelerators the physics of particle beams is provided in detail. Topics dealt with comprise linear and nonlinear beam dynamics, collective phenomena in beams, and interactions of beams with the surroundings. The design and principles of synchrotrons, circular and linear colliders, and of linear accelerators are discussed next. KaziKidz Teaching Material for Foundation Phase, Grades 1-3: A short version of the teaching resources for Life Skills Teachers. Being physically active contributes to the development of physical competence and fitness as well as to the child’s cognitive, social and emotional development. Physical Education (PE) plays a crucial role in the holistic education and development of children. Yet, in many schools from marginalised neighbourhoods, PE is not given the recognition and importance it deserves. For this reason, the KaziKidz teaching material was developed for teachers, principals, school staff or for those responsible from the Department of Education, in order to contribute to and support the quality of PE in these schools. The exercises and games in this book are easy to use, do not require a lot of material and are met with much joy and enthusiasm by the learners. The teaching material was developed by a team of South African and Swiss experts. The lessons meet the requirements of the South African Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) and are supported by the Department of Education, Eastern Cape. Particle accelerators are used today for an increasing range of scientific and technological applications. They are very powerful tools to investigate the origin and structure of matter, and to improve understanding of the interaction of radiation with materials, including transmutation of nuclides and beneficial effects or risks from radiation. They are used to identify properties of molecules that can be used in pharmacy, for medical diagnosis and therapy, or for biophysics studies.Particle accelerators must be operated in safe ways that protect operators, the population and the environment. New technological and research applications give rise to new aspects in radiation shielding. These workshop proceedings review the state of the art in radiation shielding of accelerator facilities and of irradiated targets. The main objectives of the SATIF Meetings are to: promote the exchange of information among experts in the field of accelerator shielding and related topics; identify areas where international co-operation can be fruitful; and carry on a program of work in order to achieve progress in specific priority areas.
