Molecular Mechanisms and Physiological Significance of Organelle Interactions and Cooperation

Eukaryotic cells contain distinct membrane-bound organelles, which compartmentalise cellular proteins to fulfil a variety of vital functions. Many organelles have long been regarded as isolated and static entities (e.g., peroxisomes, mitochondria, lipid droplets), but it is now evident that they display dynamic changes, interact with each other, share certain proteins and show metabolic cooperation and cross-talk. Despite great advances in the identification and characterisation of essential components and molecular mechanisms associated with the biogenesis and function of organelles, information on how organelles interact and are incorporated into metabolic pathways and signaling networks i...

Ergodic Theory, Analysis, and Efficient Simulation of Dynamical Systems

Presenting very recent results in a major research area, this book is addressed to experts and non-experts in the mathematical community alike. The applied issues range from crystallization and dendrite growth to quantum chaos, conveying their significance far into the neighboring disciplines of science.

Nonlinear Analysis and its Applications to Differential Equations

This work, consisting of expository articles as well as research papers, highlights recent developments in nonlinear analysis and differential equations. The material is largely an outgrowth of autumn school courses and seminars held at the University of Lisbon and has been thoroughly refereed. Several topics in ordinary differential equations and partial differential equations are the focus of key articles, including: * periodic solutions of systems with p-Laplacian type operators (J. Mawhin) * bifurcation in variational inequalities (K. Schmitt) * a geometric approach to dynamical systems in the plane via twist theorems (R. Ortega) * asymptotic behavior and periodic solutions for Navier--Stokes equations (E. Feireisl) * mechanics on Riemannian manifolds (W. Oliva) * techniques of lower and upper solutions for ODEs (C. De Coster and P. Habets) A number of related subjects dealing with properties of solutions, e.g., bifurcations, symmetries, nonlinear oscillations, are treated in other articles. This volume reflects rich and varied fields of research and will be a useful resource for mathematicians and graduate students in the ODE and PDE community.

This volume constitutes an advanced introduction to the field of analysis, modeling and numerical simulation of rigid body mechanical systems with unilateral constraints. The topics include Moreau's sweeping process, the numerical analysis of nonsmooth multibody systems with friction, the study of energetical restitution coefficients for elasto-plastic models, the study of stability and bifurcation in systems with impacts, and the development of a multiple impact rule for Newton's cradle and the simple rocking model. Combining pedagogical aspects with innovative approaches, this book will not only be of interest to researchers working actively in the field, but also to graduate students wishing to get acquainted with this field of research through lectures written at a level also accessible to nonspecialists.

Peroxisomes

This fully updated volume assembles a comprehensive collection of methods, techniques, and strategies to investigate the molecular and cellular biology of peroxisomes in different organisms. Peroxisome research is on the rise, as novel functions and proteins of this dynamic organelle are still being discovered through studies in model systems including humans, mice, flies, plants, fungi, and yeast, and this progress is reflected in the chapters included in this collection. Written for the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step and readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and up-to-date, Peroxisomes: Methods and Protocols, Second Edition serves as an ideal guide for researchers working on peroxisome- and organelle-based research questions.

European Congress of Mathematics, Amsterdam, 14-18 July, 2008

The European Congress of Mathematics, held every four years, has established itself as a major international mathematical event. Following those in Paris (1992), Budapest (1996), Barcelona (2000), and Stockholm (2004), the Fifth European Congress of Mathematics (5ECM) took place in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, July 14-18, 2008, with about 1000 participants from 68 different countries. Ten plenary and thirty-three invited lectures were delivered. Three science lectures outlined applications of mathematics in other sciences: climate change, quantum information theory, and population dynamics. As in the four preceding EMS congresses, ten EMS prizes were granted to very promising young mathematic...

Dynamics with Inequalities

This book addresses dynamics with inequalities comprehensively. The author develops the theory and application of dynamical systems that incorporate some kind of hard inequality constraint, such as mechanical systems with impact; electrical circuits with diodes (as diodes permit current flow in only one direction); and social and economic systems that involve natural or imposed limits (such as traffic flow, which can never be negative, or inventory, which must be stored within a given facility). This book demonstrates that hard limits - eschewed in most dynamical models - are natural models for many dynamic phenomena, and there are ways of creating differential equations with hard constraints that provide accurate models of many physical, biological, and economic systems. The author discusses how finite- and infinite-dimensional problems are treated in a unified way so the theory is applicable to both ordinary differential equations and partial differential equations.
